I used to be OK with the 4th of July when fireworks were done by towns or municipalities on the actual day itself. Now, with the rise of fireworks stores, any yahoo can buy himself some and put on his own show. As I type this, I have at least six neighbors setting them off the night before the holiday. It's freaking the hell out of my cats, and frankly, with how dry it's been around here lately, making me a little nervous about someone's yard or an open field of brush catching on fire. Just not a fan. My cats never seemed too bothered by them but I totally understand. A lot of cats and dogs get scared and run away and get lost too.
There's someone near by in the neighborhood that uses any excuse to set the things off... doesn't even have to be Jul 4 or New Year's...

It can be surprising, but this video seriously followed such a case and elegantly demonstrated how perfectly reasonable people could be fooled by our satellite. The video is in French, zut alors, but in a nutshell here's what it shows :
We start with the testimony of two people who were driving back home late at night in rural France. At one point they noticed a very bright thing low above the horizon, on their left, party hidden by trees. As the road swerved, they lost sight of it... but pretty soon it showed up again, and started to follow them quickly! Puzzled and a little worried, the driver started accelerating... to no avail! The glowing thing was staying right on their tail! His wife started being very afraid, and as they went through a sleepy little village at high speed, the thing disappeared. But lo and behold, after they were back on the dark road, it showed up again, once more tailing them no matter how fast the driver went! The couple made it to their home (a residential tower), and their pursuer just... stayed there, in the air, as if mocking them. Really spooked, they climbed to to their flat, and watched the thing through the window for 20 minutes before closing the curtains and going to bed. The strange glowing orb remained very bright, but did not seem to light their parking lot... as if its light was contained.
The next day, they reported the event; being told "it must have been the moon", they were adamant: no, it wasn't the moon; they knew what the moon looks like and beside the moon had set when they saw the UFO.
In the video a team of serious UFO chasers analyzed the story. They assumed that the couple isn't making anything up, and decided to check the moon hypothesis. Using Saros series, our investigators reproduced the couple's car trip, at the same hour, when the position of the Moon in the sky was the same as during the original event. They managed to have the UFO appear exact;y at the same spot and exactly the same time, and behave exactly the same way. Its apparent motion (like switching from a leftward position to pursuing the car) was an optical illusion caused by the way the road turned. Being spooked, the witnesses (despite their good faith) probably let their imagination run wild and misremembered the fact that the moon had not, in fact, set when they started their journey.
The experiment was rather ingenious, but what it mostly showed is that even serious, rational and apparently trustworthy people can be fooled by something we consider rather innocuous... circumstances have a huge impact on the individual experience.

Yeah, the way the moon seems to move around when it's closer to the horizon is something that I've always found a bit trippy - even though I know it's just an optical illusion if you're also moving, like in a car or even walking, I often find myself thinking, 'wait, how'd it get there all of sudden?'

Our cat actually seems to like fireworks. Last Guy Fawkes night I found him looking out of our upstairs back window just chilling out, utterly fascinated by the display taking place at the local football ground behind our home.

I’ve never had any animals that were bothered by fireworks. The family dog, since passed, had to be kept inside because she like to chase and try to eat them and kept burning her whiskers.

I don’t really read newspapers nowadays, but when I looked at some recently, I noticed many of them don’t have syndicated cartoon strips now.
I believe the Mirror still has Andy Capp, but not sure if they have more. They used to have a full page of strips, such as Andy Capp, The Perishers, Garth, and Scorer.
The Daily Star (a lousy paper) doesn’t have any.
Not sure about the Daily Mail or Daily Express. The latter had Rupert the Bear when I last checked, plus Dilbert, Calvin and Hobbes, etc.
Not sure about The Sun. It’s another lousy paper, and I have no desire to find out.
(Not being political, by the way, my “lousy” comment is due to the fact that some papers’ headlines are filled with celebrity sleaze and non-stories)
I guess - and this is a guess - that they don’t want to pay for syndicated strips nowadays. I did used to buy the Mirror years ago, and while it was the news/insight i was interested in, it was good to read a page full of strips.

That comment made me smile. What breed was she? 3/4 yellow Lab and 1/4 Golden Retriever. She looked like a Lab except she had the narrower Golden face. Very good kid dog.

Ah, that breed. Used as guide dogs here in the UK (and elsewhere, I suspect). Used to see Alsatians used as guide dogs, but haven’t seen one in that role for years.

Is the Spider-Man strip still going?

According to wikipedia, the Spider-Man strip ended in 2019. Last strip was dated March 23, 2019. -M

Even when I was a kid and into comics, I never liked the Phantom or Prince Valiant strips in the paper. As a comics kid, I felt obligated to try to read and enjoy them on principle, but I always found them aggressively dull and boring. I was annoyed at being let down a by comic.
I don't know why they never clicked for me.
