If you cry it will be like it's raining. Only sadder. Like Rutger Hauer at the end of Blade Runner. "The Light That Burns Twice As Bright Burns Half As Long — And You Have Burned So Very, Very Brightly, Roy. " Blade Runner

On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross North America We are in the arc where it will be visible, and our county is going whole hog on it. I just picked up my free pair of "eclipse glasses" at the public library when I was there the other day. -M

The total eclipse of 2017 came right over my county. I've seen two total eclipses in my lifetime, 1970 and 2017. I'll pass on this one.

So you were the guy Carly Simon was talking about in that song - I knew it!

Perhaps, but my scarf wasn't apricot... that color makes me look fat.

I saw the full solar eclipse from Cornwall in 1999. I have also seen two partial eclipses from where I live outside London; one in summer 1982 and another in 2005 or thereabouts.
Solar eclipses are rather eerie, I think. The way the light starts fading and the birds all start singing their evening song in the middle of the day, the way the wind suddenly picks up...it awakens something primeval in you and makes the hairs on your neck stand up. You can absolutely see why they used to freak our ancestors out.

Experiencing an eclipse never did anything for me, but whenever they happen, I always marvel at the coincidence of the near identical angular diameter of the sun and the moon. Also, apparently birds react differently to an eclipse than they do to the sun getting blotted out by even particularly dark/heavy storm clouds? That's neat.

Man...what a day. I opened the store, which meant being there at 8:00 am. At 11:30, my closer comes in and says his girlfriend's grandfather is in the hospital, about to undergo emergency surgery, but his son is too small to accompany his mother up to the ward and he has no one to watch him. So, he has to leave and I am stuck covering the store the entire day, until we close at 6:00. He swears up and down that he will be there tomorrow, when he is scheduled, which is supposed to be my day off. 10 and half hours! I'm beat. It caps off a long two weeks. My boss has been away on vacation, so we are short-handed, as we are stretched thin, to ensure everyone has their two days off. That thins out coverage during week days and the past two weeks have been extremely busy. I was supposed to be leaving at 6:30 pm, most days; but, I only managed to get out of the store before closing time on two shifts, because I was either working with customers that long or we were so busy that I couldn't leave the closer on their own to cope. I stopped counting how much overtime I have. Damn my parents and their Midwestern work ethic and sense of responsibility! I never set out to be in charge of anything and it keeps happening to me...in school, NROTC, the US Navy, Barnes & Noble, other companies, my current job.....I'd be happy to slack off with the rest of them and do the bare minimum; except my parents conditioned me otherwise. Grrrr.......

ps I'm not even the eldest in the family.....how'd I get stuck being the responsible one? I’m the youngest in my family. Guess who got stuck dealing with absolutely everything when both of my parents died? It was me, that’s who. You graduate law school one time…
