Well, the girl I was going to meet yesterday never texted me back... My roommate said to let it go, since she was at a party with her ex this weekend too. Ah well. Better to be disappointed early than heartbroken later Ann Landers much ?

I started watching the hurt locker, but while it's a pretty good movie I won't see the end... The shoulder-held camera makes me so seasick that the experience becomes unbearable. Cloverfield had had the same effect. Bummer! I've yet to see The Hurt Locker, but I appreciate Cloverfield as something of a guilty pleasure (even if it definitely gave me motion-sickness, too!). I liked how it followed the innocent bystanders who you usually just see get smashed by the monster as an afterthought. Also, Lizzy Caplan was just precious in it. "Wait, YOU know Superman? Are you aware of Garfield??" Incidentally, both Caplan and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (who starred in its 'spiritual successor' 10 Cloverfield Lane) are in the running for portraying Domino in Deadpool 2.

Drove from Houston back here to OKC today. What's worse than driving 440 miles in one day? How about 90% of the time it's pouring down rain, 50% of the highway is under construction and it takes you 1 1/2 hours to pass through Dallas traffic? Not enough? How about not leaving Houston till noon? Ugh. I never want to drive again. It's time for beer and R&R. Sounds sort of like a good part of my drive back home from SW Arkansas last December, which I was reminded of last night while driving home in somewhat comparable weather. Here's hoping I don't run into the same thing this time around; that trip is scheduled for this weekend. And of course I played the "highway in under construction" game back in '89 or so driving through Alexandria, La., highlighted by hitting a big damned rock in the road around midnight, which wound up puncturing my '88 Colt's oil pan, not that I knew it till I got the check oil light about 265 miles later in the NE La. boondocks (miraculously, less than 10 miles from where my aunt & first cousin lived). Most memorable drive through Dallas was easily the time in 6/83 when we were driving back to Tucson, where I was interning at the U of Arizona Press, after seeing my mother, who'd just been diagnosed with terminal colon cancer (not that they ever told her about the terminal part). We were in stop-&-go rush-hour traffic when some poor sap in a 20-foot-or-so U-Haul rammed the back of our '73 Corolla, creasing the hell out of the trunk. The driver seemed very dismayed & threw his hands up in the air in apology, but I wasn't incredibly happy. (Insurance fixed the trunk. So of course a couple of months later a hit-&-run driver repeated the impact, with nearly identical results, while I was driving to see a movie in Mesa. *sigh*)

Better to be disappointed early than heartbroken later Yep. Best to steer clear of anyone in such a situation. I speak from bitter experience, thanks to the last relationship I had in Arkansas before moving here.

So of course a couple of months later a hit-&-run driver repeated the impact, with nearly identical results, while I was driving to see a movie in Mesa. *sigh*) Of course as a young person, you want the freedom to drive and go where you want. I think that lasted like all of a year after getting my license. Every year since driving just becomes more of a hassle, stress and/or annoyance. But soon, outside of work related things, I will have a 16 year old. So maybe I can press him into service at some points when I do not want to go out when someone needs something or wants to go somewhere. It didn't help that the truck I was getting to pick up there to drive back wasn't ready at all. I got there Sunday night, was at the shop at 8am Monday morning, in Houston to get back on the road heading home. They didn't have it at that location (I had to go to another branch in Houston) when I got there it wouldn't start. Probably because they let it sit for so long. So I had to wait for them to go get another battery and install it. The tank was almost on E. So by the time I filled up and got on the highway it was almost noon. And I made the mistake of buying a pack of smokes in Houston. By the time I got home, I was too tired to even drink or play games. I laid in bed and drank one beer, while my wife watch Gilmore Girls. I also made the mistake of buying a burger at Wendy's. $10 for a Baconator combo!
