Dear Cover Contest MembersI'll be gone and taking an extended leave of absence from this forum and will be leaving by the end of this week and I've made my decision to not play this cover contest anymore because I feel that this contest is a biased contest that I feel that I've personal issues that I do not want to share because it will upset members here and all that. I don't enjoy this contest anymore and because of that I'm sticking with the four wins that I got. Sorry, I'm very unhappy with this contest and decided to take an extended leave of absence from this forum and I do not know when I'll be coming back after this Saturday. It might be February and/or March when I decided to come back. I have so many personal projects that I wanted to do and I need the this time during the Holidays to sort things out. For the record, I can share my personal thoughts about this contest through Private Message even during my absence from this forum and I will explain in the best of my ability of why I find this contest is not my liking and why. Respectfully Submitted, Juggernaut "biased contest"...ha, you think? Oh well, who cares about upsetting other members here. It's all ok, you are just expressing yourself. I have just come to the conclusion that no matter how much better my selection is than others here that I will not win, but now I just post for the fun of it. Hey, you got 4 wins, that is something. I had 1 win when I first registered btw. Also, those who wish to rag on juggernaut for expressing his opinion...just let it go. Don't stay gone long Juggernaut, look forward to seeing your future submissions. Hold on bry914, you agree that it's biased ? I don't know how it could be biased. It's not like we are all in the same room when we vote.

Do I think it's BS when I have a great cover and it doesn't get a single vote? Sure, but that won't stop me from trying the next week. I play because it's fun and I enjoy seeing all the entries. In fact, I don't even post covers to try to win anymore. At the end of the day what is the point? Nerd bragging rights? The ultimate no-prize? That said, I hope you come back Juggs!

Thing is, veronica played keyboards, while Reggie played base. Maybe they hadn't booted Moose out of the band, yet. Is Moose the Pete Best of the Archies? I always thought they made a mistake when they decided who played what instrument. Archie on lead guitar made sense as he was the frontman and namesake of the band. Veronica playing keyboards made sense - the rich girl probably had piano lessons early on. But Jughead and Reggie got the wrong instruments. Drums would suit Reggie's personality much better - big, loud, and flamboyant. While the bass player is usually more in the background but really holds the band together - perfect for Jughead.

These are the top winners since we started the contest 12 Crimebuster 11 foxley 9 hondobrode No one can guess why they win more often than the rest but my observation is that they choose covers that range from the 40's to 2006. I don't usually pick covers outside of the big 2 and from the range of 60's to 2000's. There is no formula. There have been contests where I received 5 likes for my choice and didn't receive a single vote. That's life.

I worry about winning this contest too often. It would put me in a higher tax bracket and I'd owe IRS too much money at the end of the year. Of course I could export the gold statues to an off-shore account but the Feds are monitoring the winners anyway.

If you feel the contest is biased, you're right. Any "contest" where people are asked to pick their favorites is inherently biased.
If you think you have a better cover than everyone else, realize many others feel that way too. There's no one criteria to what makes "the best" or "the favorite" for everyone. Sometimes I think the covers that win are lousy and great covers get no votes, other times I agree with the consensus vote. Am I biased? You betcha because no one else here has the same exact tastes and standards I have and no one else bases their choices on the same criteria I do. Sometimes nostalgia plays a role, in that someone posts a cover that has special meaning to me because of my experiences, no one else had those experiences so yes my vote in that case is biased. Sometimes I think a cover perfectly fits a theme, I vote for it, sometimes I think other covers better fit the theme but I like another particular cover better for whatever reason, so I vote for it. All of that is biased. Every vote I have ever cast in this contest is biased. Because I am me and not you. Unless we are all using the same rubric to judge each entry and all have the same standards how to interpret the rubric, the results are going to be biased. And even if we had a rubric, the rubric would reflect the bias of the person who designed it, so the contest would still be biased.
What can and does happen occasionally is that many of the members have a common experience with comics, so certain people can hit on covers that resonate with other members fairly frequently, but that's because the nature of the contest itself lends itself to that in a community built around those shared bonds of comic experience. Is that bias? Sure. But nothing in real life is unbiased. The first thing I was taught as a historian is that everything is biased. There is no such thing as unbiased when dealing with human beings. The trick as a historian to dealing with that is identifying the biases and keeping them in mind when interpreting the material. Maybe some folks don' like the biases the influence the vote, but that then is their bias.
When people asked to port the contest over from the old place, it was because they enjoyed the experience of discovering new covers and participating in a community activity, so I brought it over and adapted it to our classic focus rather than any cover in particular. It's older than this forum and it has been biased since before it came here because that is the nature of the beast.
If someone doesn't enjoy participating, they don't need to. Winning can be fun sure, and I feel it's an honor when my cover gets votes or is selected, but if it doesn't, oh well,it's still a great community building activity. I've been here since the beginning and brought the contest over from the old place, I've won there and I've won here, but I couldn't tell you how many times I have won or who voted for me when I did or how many times I have gotten no votes at all for covers I contributed that I thought were perfect for the theme. But I can tell you all about the great covers I discovered and have tracked down and bought though. However, the fun should come from the participation and not the outcome. Enjoy the covers, enjoy the sense of community the contest builds, if you win, it's gravy. If it's not fun for you, that's ok too, but realize that's your bias and not everyone shares it.
Follow your bliss!

Well said, mrp. I happen to like the banter about the covers while the contest is going on.

Did Mighty Mouse ever recover from his cocaine addiction in the late 1980's? I think you got him mixed up with this dope smuggler... NOT AN ENTRYNo, not at all. Mighty Mouse got caught on camera sniffing coke in one of his episodes in the late 1980's produced by Ralph Bakshi, a known dope fiend. In his defense, the mouse's lawyers claimed it was just a crushed flower. Yes it was, the coca plant
