I am not sure what Joe's problem was, but he kept getting smaller in stature... the classic (and best) GI Joe... coming in at a 1/6 scale or 12 inch figures and ready for adventure... Then there was Super Joe... done in the 8 inch Mego scale... ready to fight monsters and alien invaders... but then GI Joe got pawned by Star Wars and everything else so was reduced to the tiny 3 3/4 inch scale and only left with second rate paramilitary opponents and having to stoop to gimmicks like football players (The Fridge) and wrestlers (Sgt. Slaughter) to stay relevant... oh how the mighty had fallen, reduced literally to a mere fraction of what they once were. -M (the above is all said tongue in cheek, from someone who grew up on an entirely different GI Joe than these here whipper snappers did) My brother had the Army black hair and bearded Joe, I had the red-headed and bearded pilot. He had the Secret of the Mummy's Tomb playset, I had the headquarters set. A neighbor had a Vietnam-era Special Forces uniform accessory for his Joe. The beret was formed in the early 60s style, with the flash on the left side, rather than over the left eye, as in the later 60s. I wanted to like the cartoon; but, that animation, the lack of any real peril (pilots always ejected, no one wounded) and voice work just turned me off. When you grew up with death and mayhem in Jonny Quest, it's hard to sit through bloodless lasers. Plus, I was in high school and the writing was definitely aimed younger. The comics weren't bad and I read about 2/3 of the first dozen; but, moved on. As an old war comics fan, I had trouble with the often off-model equipment and the series didn't get the same level of artists that the old DC books did (or Sgt Fury). The stories were okay; but, kind of thin. I've looked at a few again and they are fun, for what they are. I just prefer SHIELD and Silver & Bronze Age war comics.

I had a ton of classic Joe stuff, but one of my particular favorites was the Viewmaster reels... I had the talking Joe, several different Joes some with the classic hand type but more with the new kung-fu grip. I had Atomic Mike and an Intruder, several vehicles and the training tower. The only stuff I have now is a pair of Power Record sets (Secret Mission to Spy Island and Secret of the Mummy's Tomb) and the other style Intruder than I had as a kid that picked up at the Columbus toy show earlier this year. I even had one Super Joe as a kid who mixed with my Mego World's Greatest Super-Heores, Star Trek and Apes figures not with the Joes (the Intruder got co-opted into a villain for them too). However, I've never owned anything from the 3 3/4 inch line, watched an entire episode of the cartoon (usually turn it off within 5 minutes) or read more than a handful of the comics-(I was tempted by the IDW book a few years back that featured Gulacy on art, but even then couldn't pull the trigger). I do like a couple of character designs from that line though (can't speak anything for the character personalities though, just the designs)-Scarlet is a well designed action heroine, sensible and realistic without being cheesecake, but then bringing a crossbow to a gun fight kind of kills the verisimilitude of the design no matter how good you are with that crossbow-in a stealth mission sure, in a battle nope. Snake Eyes and Destro are good comic book designs but feel more super-heroey to me (though I do sometimes get a cheesy Bond-villain vibe from Destro at times) than espionage or military. I know a lot of people though who really groove on it and a few dealers who specialize in the toys. It's not my thing for the most part, but they like it and more power to them, I am glad they have something they like. But I'll take the classic Adventure Team over it any day of the week, and I still love the recent Subaru commercials that featured the classic Joes in it (I posted a thread about it somewhere here that I'll need to track down again). -M

I had roughly four billion of those 3/4 GI Joe figures. We used to take them apart and mix the parts to make custom characters. I do not think I ever watched the show (unless they showed them at "summer camp") and I have never read the comics. I've been tempted, but it seems like the only collections I see are those hardcovers, and I'd much rather just have TPBs.

I have love for both the comic and the cartoon. Just like with the current run of Marvel and DC movies i can allow myself to disassociate what they are from each other and enjoy them individually. One doesn't ruin the other for me. I takes my pleasures where i can find them. Nothing Hollywood does ever matches the original concepts and if i allowed that to spoil the fun then i would never be watching any movies or television shows based from other sources.

I also think it's sad that GI Joe and Cobra are possibly worse marksmen than Imperial Stormtroopers...I mean come on every episode of the cartoon had everyone shooting but nothing and nobody ever seemed to get hit... -M (what do you mean standards and practices didn't allow them to shoot each other...pffft!) Have you seen the animated episode of Community where they mock this very fact? Just hilarious.

As for the comic, I didn't pick it up until issue #52 or so, but I threw myself into it hardcore, and since I'm a sick completionist, I went back to the beginning and eventually had a run from #1 through #110 or so. At some point, I sold a lot of them and pitched the others, and now I'm pondering whether or not I want to try to reassemble the run.

Amazon has fairly decent pricing for the Marvel run reprinted by IDW. Classic G. I. Joe runs $15-25 or so for each TPB (usually has 10 issues each TPB). They did 18 of them collecting the entire series. They also did Special Missions in 4 TPB and the run from around $10 used to $20 new. There is also a new G. I. Joe classic #19 up for pre-order which starts collecting the new Hama and Gallant version that IDW started back up with the original numbering at #186. It is set for pre-order pricing of $29.99 collecting issues 186 through 195.

My brother and I inherited approximately half a metric ton of Action Man vehicles and figures from an older cousin when I was 10 or so. One of my favourites was the Capture Coptor. Perfect for catching the half naked bad guys in their gold leotards. Anybody remember them or what they were called?

^^ Thanks, mrp. You know, the name "The Intruders" doesn't ring a bell with me at all. Nice comic scans there though.
