It is such a strong concept, and somehow I am enjoying all concepts.
That hasn’t always happened, e.g. I prefer DC Comics’ Star Trek: TOS over Gold Key’s and Marvel’s TOS. But with G.I. Joe, I’m enjoying it a lot, whether it be the cartoon, toy line, the various comic incarnations.
I quite prefer the more “down to earth” origin of Serpentor in the IDW series. I prefer the more down-to-earth origin of Cobra Commander in the Marvel Comics series (as I said, I think that nobleman born in Cobra-La is too “out there” for me). But it’s a big franchise, and there is room for all kinds of incarnations.
All I ask any Joe fan is, please have more love for Raptor and Devil’s Due Publishing.
Incidentally, does anyone know if Marvel had any discussions/issues with the WWF’s heel turn of Sgt. Slaughter?

I'm pretty sure Slaughter's deal with Hasbro had finished when Vince brought him back. Either that, or it was one of the conditions for rehiring Slaughter since Vince wanted full control over wrestlers' sponsorship deals. Slaughter's deal with Hasbro was the reason he left the WWF in the first place. Unbeknownst to Slaughter, Vince had signed a deal with Hasbro's rival LJN to produce WWF action figures and told Slaughter his Hasbro deal would be a conflict of interests. The pair clashed, and Slaughter walked, despite being one of the top stars in the company. Slaughter's role with Hasbro was as a real life spokesman for G.I. Joe. He was heavily involved in the promotion of the toy line and was featured in a lot of the advertising, as well as fronting the TV show. Hama barely used him in the comics. He was a much bigger fixture in the TV show. Slaughter's wrestling career never really recovered from his decision to take the Hasbro money over starring in the early Wrestlemanias.

Always thought Sgt. Slaughter was a great and fun cross promotional concept which worked well within the context of the trainer/drill sergeant for the Joe's in the cartoon. Rocky (which was announced but never happened) with Big Boa, not so much.
I can totally see Vince McMahon starting up his own Cobra division to eventually taking over and kicking out Cobra Commander!

Rumors floating around SDCC this past weekend indicate that IDW will be losing the GI Joe (and Transformers) license when they expire next year (around summertime most likely). No word if or who the license will move to after that. Apparently Hasbro lost millions with the license to Dreamweaver comics when they were the license holder for Transformers comics and in financial straights and went under before the IDW license, and IDW's current financial difficulties has Hasbro concerned about a potential repeat of that and so is looking for somewhere else to move the license to avoid another potential scenario like that.

I’m curious as to which company would pick up the licence? What I want and what is viable would be two different things, potentially.

I’m curious as to which company would pick up the licence? What I want and what is viable would be two different things, potentially. I would say most likely would be 1 of 2-Dark Horse or Marvel. Dark Horse has picked up a lot of licenses to make up for the loss of the Lucasfilm and Fox licenses (Alien/Predator) and has done really well with them They just picked up the Star Wars all ages license that IDW just lost for example. Marvel has a relationship with Hasbro, but they haven't done as well in terms of sales with the recent licenses they have picked up in recent years (Conan, Alien, Warhammer) and even Star Wars has cooled off for them. The outlier could be BOOM! Studios which has done well with the licenses they have (Power Rangers, Buffyverse, etc.) and is a growing company unlike some of the other publishers. If I had to ick one, I would put my money on Dark Horse, but that's just a guess based on a gut feeling. -M

None of the companies are very good options for Hasbro as they won't push the Joe's or Transformers (or ROM or Micronauts) in multiple or ongoing singular titles like Hasbro wants/needs to supplement the toy sales. Dark Horse is a long shot really as they are pushing most of their licensed properties towards kids friendly versions. Marvel is a strong "maybe" just to take it out of other companies hands to prevent them turning a profit ala Star Wars and Conan. Which isn't necessarily a good thing as Marvel seems to be hit and miss in sales.

Well, guys, if IDW gets the licence, I hope we have no more of that HasbroVerse nonsense that they did with that unwieldy, cluttered “Revolution” crossover a few years ago. Less would have been more with that one.

Less would have been more with that one. Yeah. I prefer the Joe/Transformers teamings which occur out of continuity. Those imaginings are almost always unique and fun without trying to add on all the other Hasbro toys which mis either too confusing or don't match up very well.

For me, it came across as glorified fan fiction, akin to how I’d throw all my toys together as a kid (Kenner Super Powers, Mattel Secret Wars, WWF Hasbro).
A universe with ROM, MASK, G.I. Joe, Transformers and goodness knows what else was in there proved too unwieldy for me. Less is more.
Logically, why would MASK exist in a universe where G.I. Joe did? Or vice versa?

Less would have been more with that one. That didn't come from IDW, that was dictated by Hasbro. That's what they want because they want to create a shared film universe using all their IP. Whomever they go to for the license, they're probably going to want to try that again. Because it's not about comics for them, or even toy sales now, it's about movie money and they have their eyes on the shared universe prize everyone thinks is the bronze ring in the wake of the success of Marvel Studios. -M

Thanks for the clarification.
When this HasbroVerse stuff occurred, even I was sceptical. And I’m a person who has gone overboard in his yearning for crossovers at points. But even this felt unwieldy.
I know that in the real world, we have different agencies, such as different branches of the military, different intelligence agencies, etc. But all those Hasbro properties in one story seemed like the kind of fan fiction that I would have indulged in when I wrote stories as a kid.
On another note, is Dynamite a viable option for the licence?

On another note, is Dynamite a viable option for the licence? Dynamite rarely pays for licenses. They usually mine questionable public domain sources then settle out of court when they get sued for trademark or copyright infringement and include paying for the license in the settlement. It's what they did with the Burroughs estate and others. So, no, I would not say Dynamite is a viable option. -M

BOOM Studios might be a likely possibility as they have quite a few licensed properties. They are also willing to have multiple series within those universes. If Hasbro really desires a combined universe or separate ongoing comics for Joe, Transformers, M.A.S.K, ROM and Micronauts athen BOOM at least might be willing.

Kinda a shame, I really enjoyed what IDW has done over the years. Not everything was great, but their Transformers line when it was More Than Meets The Eye/Lost Light were really good comics and for G.I. Joe they let Larry Hama continues his Marvel run directly (and some of their other runs on G.I. Joe were good as well. I liked their Chuckles mini-series a couple of years ago).
