I thought I’d resurrect a comment of mine from a few posts back, purely because I am *interested* in all views on this, for and against: While at 1st glance Serpentor seems like pure fantasy (especially with the introduction of Cobra-La that went too far fantastical) I think as a science-fiction plot he can and does fit into the Joe universe. I like the idea of his creation from DNA of historical leaders. I like that he usurped control of Cobra from the Commander. I like that he is and was doomed to failure losing his sanity and life. Cobra Commander's humble start as used car salesman lends itself to his hiding in Serpentors shadow. Always waiting, surviving, plotting, conniving with slippery getaways and hiding until his eventual return as leader taking over control once more is just as wonderful. Much of the fun is generated from these 2 villains lies, cheating and stealing (thank you Los bro's Guerrero for yet another comics/wrestling connection) against the Joe's and each other. Serpentor's glorious ego plays so well off the rest of those Cobra leaders who are only in it for the money and power. Serpentor is even better with age now that politics has caught up to the Cobra concept. Serpentors arrogance as Emperor suits the storylines of Cobra going from terrorist plots to ginormous plans to rule the world strategies. And nobody pulls of that splendid serpent style like Serpentor does. Serpy and Commander are the Laurel and Hardy or Abbott and Costello or Pinky and the Brain of Cobra. Add Destro to them and you have 3 Stooges fun and games.

Thank you. May I put the same question to you regarding Cobra Commander’s various origins? I like the salesman origin.

Thank you. May I put the same question to you regarding Cobra Commander’s various origins? I like the salesman origin. Commander as a Cobra-la lackey sucks rancid snake venom. I much prefer the salesman concept. Tired of the 9-5 grind hustling for chump change he figures out the big money is in leadership as corporate manipulation for extortion and terrorism. He is such a great salesman he convinces an weapons manufacturer, swamp gangs, mercenaries and untold thousands in poverty as troopers to support him. Oily, slick, sleazy and sneaky is our High Commander of Cobra. His hood and mirrored face mask not meant for really hiding his features, but more like a comment on his anonymity as just another faceless lowly paid nobody aspiring to make the American Dream come to fruition for himself. From nameless nobody of zero worth to exalted Commander of his "loyal" followers as long as the benefits and money flows in. And CC has one of the BEST animated voice characterizations ever created. I hear his "voice" in my head whenever reading the comics. Cobra Commander could manage to convince Megatron in switching from Energon to Unleaded or Electricity as a main power source. All the while charging twice the going price and selling the Decepticons out to the Transformers for a reward.

Just showing love for the truly underrated Raptor: Does anybody truly love a tax man? Especially one who enjoys dressing up like a bird? Hasbro was kind of stretching the limits in characters in some ways. Like Crystal Ball, Croc Master, Big Boa and it got worse at the end. Can't say I was really feeling the love for Cobra Alley Viper or Joe Eco-Warriors or the Cobra-La cast of loonies. I remember Raptor being used in the GI Joe novels. Will have to dig those out and find time to read again after the holidays.

There’s a text story in one of the UK annuals where Raptor has an ideological clash with Storm Shadow (not the main plot). I did like that.
Croc Master, while visually cool, was a bit “out there” for me.

After 2 years of having to wear a mask for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, I have a new respect for the Cobra grunts. They couldn't hit the side of a barn, even if their muzzle was pressed against it; but, they put up with those masks, even in the mess hall.

Truth. Cobra was fighting Corona Virus by masking up (Commander and Destro took it a bit too far) long before our government wanted to admit there was such a thing and that we should be masking to slow and prevent passing it along. Cobra, your caring terrorist group. They will take over your town but never resort to infectious disease warfare.

People joke about the marksmanship in the cartoon, but Hama wasn't afraid to kill off characters in the comic. Even poor old Raptor above dies in the most gruesome way imaginable.
One of my fondest memories of G.I. Joe is those 1986 trading cards. I can still smell the chewing gum today. Hell, you could probably still eat the chewing gum today with all the additives it had.

Love that Bandai card set so much. I still have the full set in card sleeves in a binder. Also have the 1991 card set from Impel in a binder. Wish I would have seen the Milton Bradley cards with the painted toys card hanging figures to buy back then.

Any views on Croc Master?
Visually cool (like most G.I. Joe characters), but always seemed a tad impractical, having to lug that crocodile around…
