Not sure if it got mentioned and maybe not all that significant, but Captain Savage spun out of the pages of Sgt. Fury and got his own title. I personally love the Leatherneck Raiders sobriquet. -M

A lot of these don't seem very significant.

A lot of these don't seem very significant. Perhaps not, in the grand scheme of things.

Sister Power, the Freak, first showed up in Brother Power, the Geek #3 before her brief run as the back-up in Captain Action. And, of course, Zeelk!, the inter-dimensional meerkat, spun out of those pages. How could I forget? Especially when Zeelk used her multi-dimensional powers try to arrange a wedding between the Geek and the Freak.

A lot of these don't seem very significant. Are you biased against the non-significant or something?

Especially when Zeelk used her multi-dimensional powers try to arrange a wedding between the Geek and the Freak. That double-sized wedding issue with the tear-away bridal garter centerfold must have been the highlight of 1972. Too bad they found out they were cousins at the end

So many great ones already posted! There's The Hangman, of course. I don't think I've mentioned him before. He first appears in a feature that starred another superhero. . .his brother, in fact. . .who ( significantly) dies!

Not American comics, but the Smurfs! Originally introduced as side characters in "Johan et Pirlouit", they have far eclipsed their original title in popularity and pop cultural impact.

Popeye was a supporting character in Thimble Theatre who later took over the strip and became the star. Don't know if that's technically a spin-off, thopugh.

I can remember seeing it as "Thimble Theatre, featuring Popeye" when I was a kid.
