This month I bought issue 292 from the comic shop to get into some of the lesser known issues during the 1980s.
Anyone know if there's any earlier issues from the late 1970s to jump into and not into a major story arc going on?

Roy Thomas' run, from about #157 up has plenty of good moments, with shorter story arcs. Len Wein and Marv Wolfman followed him, with similar runs. Thomas handled the comedic elements well, too. George Perez does a lot of art, off and on, during Thomas and Wein's runs, and some of Wolfman's The Fantastic Four Visionaries: George Perez volumes cover that well and Essential FF vol 7 and 8 cover a portion of it.
Thomas is on around the mid-70s and Wolfman is handling it in the late 70s.

What codystarbuck said. Standout issues for me would be #176-179,181-188 (Lots of Perez art, Impossible Man, Frightful Four, Brute, Negative Zone, Salem's Seven, Agatha Harkness, Molecule Man), 198-200 (Son of Dr. Doom/Clone with FF powers) 209-214 (John Byrne art, Skrulls, Galactus, Sphinx, Terrax)

I started reading it regularly after Kirby left in 1972. So my "jumping on point" was around # 102 or so.

For me, it's Fantastic Four #1 and onward ... my favorite team in Marvel Comics!

For me, it's Fantastic Four #1 and onward ... my favorite team in Marvel Comics! Pretty much. For the Fantastic Four I'd recommend buying the first FF Masterworks volume and jumping on at the very beginning... it's always a very good place to start!

I have the 1st Fantastic Four Masterworks and it's was the 1st one ... and I enjoyed reading the early days of this iconic group.

I think the early days of the Fantastic Four were very enjoyable, those early issues were a strong start to a good team.

My jumping on point was #172, so that's Roy Thomas and George Perez. It's tough not to get hooked with Perez art. Roy Thomas is also one of my favorite writers, though this was the Ben Grimm exoskeleton period, which I could have done without.

Last weekend last week I went to the comic book shop and bought one old issue of Fantastic Four and its issue 174. The only oldest issue I could get since it was pretty cheap at $2.50
Next couple of issues after that, theres Impossible Man that pops up in 175 or 176 I think

Not too much of a time investment but great story and art by Wolfman and Byrne and it has Galactus, Sphinx , and introduces Terrax.

If any of the younger generation watched the 2015 Fantastic Four movie, reading those early FF issues will seem like Shakespeare!

Compared to the2015 movie, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes seems like Shakespeare.
