Alterna Comics announces it's switching to newsprint for its line of floppies and dropping cover prices to between $ 1 and $ 1.99.
How refreshing !
I applaud this and will look closer at what they're putting out.
The collections will retain the better printing, fine.

I've responded to this company on another site (the MegoMuseum) and so I am just going to repost what I posted there... later in the thread... and when someone wondered how a publisher could do that... So yeah, I'll believe it when I see it, and I highly doubt I will ever see it. -M

Even if it did happen, I couldn't see Marvel or DC ever going back to newsprint for their comics to reduce prices. (Although it would be very nostalgic if they did!)

I'm not remotely convinced that it would reduce prices. There's no reason to be convinced as I can back MRP's assertion that newsprint is expensive to get a hold of. I was the chief editor at the school paper back in college and in the face of budget cuts that were going to make us go digital only the academic adviser and I looked into newsprint to keep the paper physically on the racks only to find that it was more expensive than the paper we were currently using.

That was my understanding. I seem to recall an editorial from the late 90s, maybe by Dick Giordano, in response to rising prices and a cry for a return to newsprint to lower prices, that he stated it would be more expensive on newsprint because it was hard to get and there were few printing presses left that could do large-scale color printing on newsprint.

I think I remember that too now that you mention it, but I didn't when I thought it was a solution to the Paper's woes. In many ways, at face value it is counter intuitive, lower quality paper must cost less one would think, but supply and demand say differently.

Well, this is all pretty informative.
Despite being an inferior product, I guess it does make sense with supply and demand that it's actually more expensive.
Sad in a way.

And, even if newsprint was less expensive to print on, the cost in setting up the materials and machinery to do it would be astronomical. There are no printers left who are set up to print comic-sized newsprint anymore.

I remember as a kid seeing Comic Books printed on Newsprint Paper was so much fun to collect and what I have been reading here it's sad that they don't do this anymore. I was hoping that Comic Books can be cheaper to print if they used Newsprint Paper and what I read in shaxper post here he's right on the money and it's sad to see that technology ruins yesterday's paper. I would love to see Comic Books printed on Newsprint and looks like it won't happen at all. It Sad ... just like hondobrode said earlier on.

I wouldn't say it'll never happen again, after all it wasn't that long ago that DC did the wildly successful Wednesday Comics, it's just that printing on newsprint isn't the answer to cheaper comics.

I could be wrong, but I suspect part of the reason newsprint costs more is that it's 100% paper, whereas the glossy stuff comics are printed on now is a hybrid of paper and other materials (plastic?). It's sourcing, logging, cutting, washing, and bleaching the wood itself that is likely so costly.

Both of you are correct, unfortunately.

Agree with everything here. Newsprint can be hard to source and more expensive, especially for small runs. I was talking to Hilary Staton about the Dick Tracy books they did for free comic book day last year or year before: the writer wanted to print them on newsprint and it made the whole process more difficult.

I just wish Marvel and DC would stop using glossy paper, not only in the comics, but in trades. I can't fathom why anyone would want a paper stock that's reflective of light sources and can often be hard to read because of it. I despise glossy paper.
I was pleasantly surprised that the recent Batman Adventures trades are being printing in what I assume is newsprint. They certainly have that classic smell.
