When I started collecting about 15 years ago, I snubbed the idea of titles like Marvel Tales. Why buy the reprints when I could find a lot of the original issues?
Well now that may not be possible and for a lot of us, securing first issues or early issues of a title can be downright impossible. Now, I am a fan of the floppies (reading an online copy just doesn't do it for me) so I am interested in your favourite issues you own that reprints a classic or older comic.
For me, it has to be my copy of Batman #1
I love these treasuries and have a few more that I really want to track down (The Superman/Ali being the big one). I think these are just the coolest comic formats ever done...even if storing them is a bit difficult. Do they even make bags, I have never looked?
Anyways, what are your favourite reprints? Maybe they offer a cool new cover. Or are just the best at keeping the original story in all its glory. Or just the cheapest

I've been looking for a lot of reprints of things that would be too expensive for me in the original - so Marvel Tales for the early Spider-Man, Marvel Super-Heroes for the early Daredevil, Marvel Triple Action for the early Avengers, something I forget for the early FF, etc, etc.
I was very glad to find out about these because I dislike the paper and colouring of the Marvel Masterwrks and other later reprint formats. But you have to watch out, because after a certain point in the 70s, they started cutting pages from the original story due to the lower page count in the comics of that time. So I don't buy any Marvel Tales, for example, after a certain point, - I forget the exact issue # when I figured they started omitting pages.

The complete first appearance story, an awesome early gatefold cover, and a fascinating introduction by Claremont providing tons of insight into the early ideas surrounding Wolverine. I sold my #181 years ago to pay rent and never once regretted it because I like this edition even better.

^ I have seen that and added to my want list because I will never be able to afford #180-182...well maybe #182 but definitely not the others. Does it reprint all three or just the #181?
People seem to share your desire for it...its not the cheapest reprint around but much better than shelling out your life savings for the original.

Just #180-181, as the cameo in #182 is entirely unimportant and unrelated to the plot. I bought this for a few bucks back in 1990. Wasn't aware it was fetching a higher price these days!

Gotcha. Yeah if you are lucky you can get a $2-3 copy online, but most sell for $6-10 it seems.

100 Pages - Justice League of America Super SpectacularWhen I was a kid these were gems and I usually save up my monies and buy these reprints that often showcase 3 Complete Reprints for .50 cents and they were unreal for a 10 year old kid then. I have about 12-15 of these books and I often look at them for the sheer joy of it.

I LOVED the DC 100 pagers. A new story followed by several reprints. It was my intro into a lot of DC's Golden Age stories. I also liked Marvel's reprints to read the early Silver Age stuff that I missed. The Treasury Editions were great & I have a shelf full of DC Archives & Showcase Presents...as well as Marvel Masterworks & Essentials.
And I like the Archie reprints from different decades. They give you a glimpse of America thru the years.

When I was first getting into comics these two Essential series helped get me into Vertigo in a way that was helpful to my limited comics budget until I could afford and/or track down the trades or back issues.

The only way I read any comics material these days is from all the collected editions available via the library systems in New York City. Fortunately for me there is literally tons of volumes available. A lifetime's worth of comics and newspaper stripes to read
I can understand folks buying those collected volumes. What I can't understand is buying those old Marvel Tales and other Marvel reprint comics from the 1970s. The majority of them have a few pages chopped out, inferior covers compared to the originals and bad paper quality. If the stories are available in a tradebook, that's the way to go

I am a fan of the several fascimile editions lines that were done by Marvel and DC over the years... DC had the Millennium Editions it did in 2000... and for things like Detective #27 it's nice because you can find the Batman story reprinted in lots of places but this has the entire issue which is much harder to find reprints of. Some of these however, are getting pricey in and of themselves. They also had the Silver Age Classics line in the 90s... these are nice, but do not cover as broad a spectrum as the Millennium Editions did. Marvel had the Marvel Milestone editions... these contain facsimiles of the complete issues, ads and all I believe. These came out in the 90s and cover a nice range of MArvel history. Some of these can get a little pricey now too though. Marvel also had a bunch of facsimile editions packaged with some of their Action figures... that look the same up front but have current era advertising on he back cover. Again these can be pricey because they were never sold on their own but then you can also find them on the cheap too (I found a Hulk 181 reprint for $1 at Half Price Books last year while Lonestar wants $18 for a VG+ copy of it). I find for me, these are much more economically viable ways of owning some classic stories in comic book format, and a superior option to reprint books like Marvel Tales, DC 100 page giants etc. Usually only key issues are included in these lines, but then those are the ones where back issue prices are the highest, so it works out. -M
