Since Usagi is going to be on hiatus for a while, I'm starting to make plans for where to get my Usagi fix in the meanwhile. Obviously, I'll be re-reading the back issues (again) but what other runs do you recommend reading as a decent substitute/replacement?
I think I'll spend some time revisiting the Carl Barks duck stories for the sense of young innocence and wide open space adventure, and Paul Kupperberg's Life with Archie for the idealism and character development, but I don't know a decent substitute for Stan's art. That will be the hardest void to fill.

Somewhat luckily, I'm not caught up on Usagi, so I'll spend the hiatus by reading those last nine issues. I also recently got my hands on copies of the two Usagi role-playing games. They both have some original artwork, but I'm mainly interested in reading (not playing--I don't have time for that nowadays) how the authors translate the feel of the comic into RPG form, because I don't envy anyone trying to do that.

Since i have just begun into Yojimbo Saga book 2, i have 5 more books to leisurely read through. Along with having started up reading the collected Elfquest's and the Judge Dredd Chronicles. Also have the collected Cadillac's and Dinosaur's and thinking on reading again my collected Fred Hembeck's which always inspire and energize me with their frenetic and enthusiastic takes on comic book collecting.

I'm reading Hellboy (just finished the Hellboy Library vol. 5), still have the last 3 Usagi trade paperbacks to read before I'm caught up anyway (though I have been reading the monthly comics for the past nine months or so), and then Space Usagi. Then I have a giant pile of other comic volumes to read, including: The Maxx, Sweet Tooth, From Hell, The Sixth Gun, Ms. Marvel, Y: The Last Man, Strangers in Paradise, Locke & Key, the last couple TMNT Ultimate Collections, BPRD, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, and a few others, so plenty of comic reading materials for me.  |

I've only just discovered Usagi, so I'm okay for several months!
I've just begun the lovely two-volumes set published by Fantagraphics, reprinting Usagi's first appearances. Really great stuff, even if we see that his character wasn't quite set yet; he appears a little more ruthless in those early days, closer to Miyamoto Musashi as depicted in Yoshikawa's novel.
I was surprised to see human characters in there (particularly Lord Hikiji). Was that later changed? (It wouldn't take much to change a cartoony human into a cartoony feline). A cameo by Groo made me smile, as I thought there is a certain kinship between Stan's style and Sergio's.
I feel privileged to have so much great material to look forward! Usagi is already one of my favourite comics characters.

I'm sure that's why he's never been shown again. |

You know your stuff, Ben! Yes, Musashi was Stan's template for Usagi, though I believe he was more familiar with the cinematic versions that were playing in theaters during his youth. I'm a huge fan of the Samurai trilogy, though usagigoya would argue there are better adaptations out there |

Funny you should mention me and Musashi in the same post. I just received a DVD in the mail today of Hiroshi Inagaki's 1950 version of Sasaki Kojiro which has Toshiro Mifune's first appearance as Musashi Miyamoto.
