Post single issues which contain a fully self-contained story that was satisfying every way (story, art, everything).
No dreary cross-over event that takes a whole bunch of books or series.

I think mine would either be Legends of the Dark Knight #54 by Mike Mignola, it's a fantastic mix of classic Batman ideas and pure horror that just works perfectly.

When this came out, it featured just about every hero Marvel had (even Millie The Model) and every villain the FF faced centering on an historic event.Plus reprints of FF # 6 and 11. And lots and lots of Kirby art

Uncanny X Men #205 Superman Man of Steel story arc Crisis at Hand along with Superman 73 I think. Good underrated story arc.
1990s Wolverine. Issue 96. A camping trip story

Showcase #100-all the characters who had appeared in Showcase appear in a self-contained crisis event story from 1977 or 78.
Another is Justice League of America #200. A-list characters (for the most part) with A-list art from some of the best artists at the time.

I was always a sucker for obscure characters, and it's packed full of them.
My first choice for this thread would have to be Avengers Annual 10: Claremont at the top of his game, Michael Golden art, first appearance of Rogue, the Avengers vs. the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and cameo appearances by the X-Men and Spider-Woman.

Doesn't it sort of depend heavily on your familiarity with Avengers #200 and the subsequent fallout from that tale for AA10 to have any resonance, though? It's a cool story, but it's "Part II."

Honestly, the Carol Danvers stuff at the end completely slipped my mind. I see your point, but the majority of the issue is a self-contained story.

"Honestly, the Carol Danvers stuff at the end completely slipped my mind." - Thor, Cap, Iron Man, Wonder ManThat's kind of the point of the thing, I think. But you're right that there's a lot to unpack in that issue, and about Claremont and Rogue as well.

I was prepared to continue defending it as a complete story, but you completely disarmed me with that post. Great point, and very funny

Featuring a Joe Kubert Tarzan story, a Russ Manning Classic ("The Lost World," with Tarzan and Dinosaurs), a great Rex the Wonder Dog Story, and equally great Detective Chimp, a Korak story with Alex Nino art, and Congo Bill.

There are quite a few first-rate Conan the Barbarian issues that qualify but I'll go with Kull #1 as my first suggestion: Basically Kull's "origin", in comic book terminology, I think it works as a self-contained story even though as an origin story it naturally leads into everything else that follows.

Astro City #1/2 is the most obvious choice to me. (Perhaps the second most obvious choice. The greatest single issue of all time is Amazing Fantasy #15, but that would cost a lot of bucks.)
