This was one of the first ones that popped into my head. Me too. Just one of the best single issue Marvel stories ever. I also loved that Power Puff Girls homage.

I'll add my two cents for the Treasury Size Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes, featuring the wedding of Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl. It has great Mike Grell art and features pretty much every Legionnaire to that point plus the Legion of Substitute heroes plus plenty of other supporting character (I think the Heroes of Lallar may have even been in there?). Unfortunately, I couldn't find a good image of the splash page featuring the actual ceremony - a beautiful two page (Treasury Size!) layout with everybody who's anybody, so you'll just have to settle for the cover:

Single issue...check. Self-contained story...well there are a few. Detective Comics #500 is one of my go-to's...though pretty much any comic written by Alan Brennert will be there. In addition to the bona-fide classic of To Kill a Legend by Brennert and Giordano you have a really fun Slam Bradley tale that brings in almost all the Detectives who ever appeared in Detective comics; a text story with amazing spot illos by Walt Simonson; an Elongated Man story with fabulous art by J.L.Garcia-Lopez and some other decent stories. I honestly didn't realize that Solo #5 was within the purview of the classics now. I honestly consider this to be Darwyn Cooke's magnum opus. He did the entire book, writing, art, lettering and colors. And it is absolutely phenomenal.

Do adaptations count? I think they should, as not all adaptations are equal. E.g. "Classics Illustrated" deserves respect for shear quantity, plus those later covers, but I thought the insides were often dull. But for my money (and I count every penny!), Marvel Classic Comics, especially the British reprints, were are the best single issues ever. Every single one was a guaranteed unforgettable hit. I loved the Marvel UK cover design. Even though they messed up the last two issues (Moonstone and Food of the Gods) and accidentally swapped some of the pages! Even in the years when I didn't keep any other comics, I always kept these. Love, love LOVE them. From Marvel UK's Pocket Book line! I loved those books! Some of the Classic Comics material was also reprinted in serialised form in Doctor Who Weekly.

This still remains my favorite comic: It certainly ranks high on my list as well. This is the last thing Byrne did that really grabbed me. For me, it's his last truly great work. I love the open chase scene featuring the Joker. Stellar art and storytelling.

Everyone's favourite issue of Marvel Team-Up:

Drama, action, tragedy, all in amazing detail by Miller and Janson. This issue served as a great intro to the team members and several prominent moments in their history. A Done-In-One story by Bill Mantlo and Ron Frenz. Wanting to prove he still has the mettle to be a top-notch reporter, Jameson takes over a waterfront corruption story. Told from his perspective, Jameson follows the leads to the end, encounters Kingpin along the way, and even has help from his Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (even though he's never aware of it). A terrific focus on a supporting cast member.

These crossovers were a dream come true and I was elated when I finally got them. My 2 faves from Marvel and DC in one awesome, giant comic.

Apparently I'm doing something wrong when trying to post images from Photobucket; anyway I see nobody's yet mentioned Uncanny X-men Annual #3 - the single best annual ever (Arkon attacks the X-mansion, the X-men save Arkon's homeworld! All with lovely art by Perez and Austin). Marvel Two-in-One #51 would be my runner-up - Thing's poker game with at the Avengers mansion gets interrupted by an attack on SHIELD's Helicarrier - it's too bad the FF isn't in the Marvel movie universe, that would be my suggested story for the third Avengers movie...
