Sold most of my comics when I got married 33 years ago. Didn't have the room to store them at the time.

Art by Frank Thorne and Joe Kubert. At this point Kubert was trying to get ahead of the deadlines. Instead of doing two issues in a row with reprints he asked his friend artist Frank Thorne to pencil this story. IMO it was a great pairing. Summary: Tarzan goes after pirates that steal construction equipment from a hospital outpost. They cover this up by vandalizing the property. He finds them in the City of the Dead using the stolen supplies to excavate the ruins to steal treasure. Tarzan seals the ruins with the stolen TNT. He then takes a gem to give to the outpost to pay for rebuilding. As far as I know this was an original story not an adaption from the ERB books.

A few comments. I really liked Thorne's pencils inked by Kubert. I felt at this point Kubert was a little overwhelmed with all his job duties. The stories were good but not as good as the first few issues.
However I think this "lull" enabled Kubert to get his second wind. As we will see he will really hit his stride.
There will be two multipart stories coming up: The Return of Tarzan & Tarzan & the Lion Man. There will be only one more fill in issue (& another story pairing with Russ Heath) until Kubert turns over art duties to Franc Reyes & Rudy Florese.

Tarzan rescues a man from crocodiles. The man tells an incredible story about his people that live in secluded valley. They have been enslaved. He dies from injuries & infection. Tarzan goes to the valley & finds a queen named Kyra who has enslaved the people there. Tarzan challenges her rule & fights in the arena. Tarzan wins but does not allow Kyra to be killed. He states he will return if the valley is not ruled with compassion. I believe this was another original story. Kubert's art is still fresh & raw on this story. The story itself not only shows Tarzan's physical strength but also his moral fortitude.

Millionaire Darryl Hanson leaves NYC to hunt big game in Africa. Tarzan warns him to stop. He is angry that Hanson doesn't kill to eat or to defend himself. He only does it for a "trophy". Tarzan also witnesses Hanson hitting his wife. Hanson kills an albino baby elephant. Tarzan takes Hanson's rifle & chases him thru the jungle. When Hanson falls into quicksand Tarzan lets him drown in it. He tells Hanson's wife she is free from his abuse.

Another original story. And yes Tarzan rules! He lets Hanson die. Wow! When I read this as a pre teen I couldn't believe it. As an adult...I still can't believe the CCA let this get by. But it does make for a more "realistic" story. Tarzan would be used to swift & final "justice" growing up in the jungle. Kubert's art is still amazing. And I feel these stories hold up 40+ years later.
Next issue Kubert starts his 5 part adaption of ERB's second novel "The Return of Tarzan."

Walking thru Paris Tarzan hears a woman's cry for help. He finds a woman surrounded by men in a nearby apartment & quickly subdues them. When the police arrive the woman claims the men were protecting her from Tarzan. Realizing it was a trap to capture him, Tarzan escapes. His thought take him back to Baltimore when he discovered Jane Porter was engaged to his cousin William Clayton. Tarzan then left America to return to France. While on the boat he becomes involved in Count & Countess De Coude being blackmailed by Rokoff the Countess' brother. Of course Tarzan intervenes & makes an enemy (Rokoff). When Tarzan returns to Paris he goes to stay with his friend D'Arnot & tells him of the incident on the boat. Later Rokoff manipulates events to make it look like Tarzan is having an affair with the Countess. Tarzan confronts Rokoff & makes him write a confession. Rokoff vows to kill Tarzan. Tarzan could care less. All he wants to do is return to the jungle.

After several original stories Kubert returns to adapting ERB's stories. This time it is ERB's second novel. While the last several issues have been great this issue Kubert seems inspired & really does some incredible work. His script & his art are perfect in telling the story. He does exceptionally well drawing scenes of Tarzan on the boat & in Paris. The art is more "polished" than his art when Tarzan thinks about the jungle. Even dressed up in a suit his Tarzan still explodes with power.

I was glad to see Kubert covering the Paris episode. As I recall, when Tom Yeates adapted the return of Tarzan for Dark Horse years later, he basically skipped it... much to my chagrin. I like Tarzan playing the fish out of water.

I like Tarzan playing the fish out of water. Tarzan is much more like a shark out of water! Everyone's perception is mislead by his mannerisms until he shows his skills as a hunter/predator. Rokoff makes a truly bad mistake thinking he can outwit and take advantage of Tarzan only for getting on the wrong side of the Lord of the Jungle.

True, true, and Tarzan and Conan (two of my childhood heroes) are both cut from the same cloth in that regard.

Tarzan is anxious to get out of France & accepts an offer to go to Algeria on behalf of the French Government. They wish him to investigate a Lt Gernois. He is suspected of selling information to hostile governments. While there Tarzan of course gets into trouble rescuing pretty girls & getting into fights. By the end of the issue Tarzan has been captured by Rokoff who has a connection with Gernois.

I wasn't as thrilled with this chapter when I read it. As a comic it wasn't as compelling as I thought it would be. However Kubert does great adapting the story. The best part about putting Tarzan in yet another locale was getting to see Kubert's talents at drawing exotic scenes. This time in a desert location.
Next issue: Tarzan returns home!

Of course Tarzan escapes from being captured last issue. He finds Gernois & Rokoff together in town. He confronts Rokoff. The next day he finds out Gernois committed suicide. He also gets the papers Rokoff has been selling to other governments. Tarzan is then sent to Cape Town. While on the boat he talks to a Hazel Strong who happens to be a friend of Jane Porter. She tells Tarzan (who she does not know IS Tarzan) Jane's story & how she still loves Tarzan. Later that night Tarzan wanders the boat lost in thought & is accosted by Rokoff & his men & thrown overboard. In Cape Town Hazel meets up with Jane & they get on board a boat bound for London. However the boiler explodes & the survivors escape by life boat. Meanwhile Tarzan has swam & washed up on the coast near his old home. He rests & regains his strength. He hunts & helps a local tribe. He is renewed being back in the jungle!
