As a preteen this is what I wanted. Tarzan back in the jungle. As an adult I enjoy Tarzan being in civilization but I still felt some excitement re-reading this when he was back in the jungle! I think Kubert felt the same way. His words & art seem to resonate with an increased level of passion. Seeing Tarzan back in his element was beautiful. YES!!

I think Kubert felt the same way. His words & art seem to resonate with an increased level of passion. Seeing Tarzan back in his element was beautiful. YES!! Tarzan amidst the jungle with all of it's primordial magnificence is basically what everyone envisions and epects when you say the name Tarzan. The 3 issues adapting Return of Tarzan was probably a risk to do in a monthly comic where it was most likely anybody reading the series would only know of Tarzan from the movies and possibly the newspaper strip. Reducing it into 2 issues might have been a better idea if not the best option. The story itself is necessary though to show Tarzan is more than an ignorant savage beast of the jungle, he is in fact very intelligent, articulate, creative and adaptable to any situation which arises. He also has a certain natural sense of presence which he carries that any would notice and be drawn towards: the combinations of brains, strength, skill, leadership, handsome/beauty, personality and more. All attributes which contribute to the longevity of Tarzan's continuance in the entertainment world even through today.

The Return of Tarzan. Part 4: The City of Gold. While celebrating with the Waziri tribe Tarzan hears a story of a city filled with gold & death. Tarzan asks to see the Forbidden City. The Waziri lead Tarzan to the city but they do not enter with him. Inside Tarzan is attacked & overcome by prehistoric men. They speak the language of the great apes. They bring Tarzan to the high priestess of Opar. Karnak (the leader of the men) & La (the priestess) disagree on Tarzan's fate. When Karnak attacks La Tarzan breaks free & kills Karnak. La tells Tarzan they are descendants of a doomed city that sank into the ocean. Their ancestors fled from (Atlantis) & settled here in Opar. She leads Tarzan to a chamber & he escapes thru a tunnel to the outside. Meanwhile Jane's party lands on the beach & Jane is captured by the beast men of Opar. Tarzan finds out from the apes that a white woman has been taken by the beast men. Tarzan returns to Opar to rescue the woman & discovers that it is Jane & she is about to be sacrificed! Next: The Conclusion.

Kubert continues the adaption of ERB's Return of Tarzan novel. I love this type of Tarzan adventure. It almost felt like a Conan story. Hidden cities. Prehistoric men. Ties to myth (Atlantis). Fate that Tarzan & Jane are meant to be together. I also think Kubert does better with the multi part stories instead of the single issue stories. Of course Kubert's art is stunning.

Conclusion of the Return of Tarzan. Part 5: The Pit of Doom. William Clayton lies dying on the beach. Jane lies on the Altar of Opar. She is about to be sacrificed. Tarzan leaps down & fights off the beast men with fire & frees Jane. The Priestess La takes Tarzan back to the chamber with the hidden tunnel. Tarzan & Jane escape thru it to the outside. Along the way Tarzan finds the treasure room of Opar filled with gold. When they stop for food Jane tells Tarzan about her getting stranded after the boat blew up & being captured by the beast men. Tarzan asks the Waziri where the survivors are. He takes Jane there. They find Rokoff, Prof Porter & Hazel. Tarzan kneels to talk to Wm Clayton. Before Clayton dies he confesses he read Tarzan's telegram confirming Tarzan is the real Lord Greystoke. Tarzan later buries the deceased Clayton next to his parents. Rokoff attacks Tarzan & Tarzan is ready to kill him when D'Arnot arrives to rescue them. He remarks that Tarzan's cabin on the beach is where they all met & now have returned to. Prof Porter comments that a wedding could be held at the cabin. The last panel shows Tarzan thinking he must return to Opar soon...

Taking a short break (probably 2 weeks) from these reviews. Well deserved. You've done a great job here, especially in showing just how frikkin' good Kubert is. I have always, always loved his work, but over the last few years, I have developed an even deeper appreciation for the constant excellence of his art. He has to be acknowledged as being in the top rank of all comics creators; even a Kirby fanatic (and I love the guy and his work!) can see that Kubert is at the very least his equal. I think he is better. Quality, longevity, constant improvement, variety of genre, influence, a fine writer as well as an extraordinary artist. A genius.

I feel like I am constantly repeating myself. Every issue Kubert is astounding. This run was truly the perfect combination of creator, character & concept.

Tarzan rescues a beautiful woman from a group of rogue apes. She tells Tarzan that she is the handmaiden to the Priestess La of Opar. Kla of the Beast Men wants to kill La. Tarzan returns to Opar. Tarzan, La & her handmaiden are captured by the Beast Men. They are taken to an arena & La's deformed giant brother Rokar is commanded to kill them. The handmaiden dies first. Tarzan is next but La appeals to Rokar as his sister to spare Tarzan. In his dim brain he recognizes La as his sister & kills Kla instead before being killed by the other Beast Men. Tarzan pulls down an idol killing more Beast Men. The rest surrender to Tarzan & La. La begs Tarzan to remain & rule Opar with her. Tarzan declines & returns to the jungle.

Finally we get to see Kubert's visualization of Opar, the land of beautiful women and some pretty darn ugly men. Rokar being truly hideous as drawn by Kubert. You could believe this beast was capable of Killing Tarzan. I also loved that opening page with the apes swinging through the jungle branches with the handmaiden of La in their embrace.

In the village of B'Tunga murders are occurring. Tarzan investigates & is accused of being the murderer by Zohar the medicine man of the village. Tarzan lets out the cry of the great bull ape & the apes storm the village & free him. The Moon Beast awakens at dusk & fights Tarzan.
