# 59 - Draggin' the River - Ferlin Husky
This one honestly perplexes me...but you can't fight the algorithm. Husky released this one as a single in 1959. It's a pretty simple lost love country song. Nothing fancy. But sometimes that's all you really need. And Husky was always a fine singer, if not a great actor.
"Alone so low with misery Nothing but blues for company Well if things get worse, I can’t shake this curse Then start draggin' the river for me"

Mrs. MRP started watching the documentary "If These Walls Could Sing" about Abbey Studios while I was puttering on some other things in the same room and I ended up getting sucked in and watching it with her this afternoon. So much amazing music recorded there. You could have an amazing record collection if it just consisted of albums recorded there. But there was a lot of interesting insight provided by artists who recorded there (but it was a bit disconcerting to see how some of them have aged poorly or well, as the interviews all occurred recently). It covered an array of recording artists, not just pop/rock acts. Well worth checking out even for the casual music fan. Informative, but mostly a celebration of the studio and the music created there.

A PSA for my metal friends, and a question as well. Tagging impulse and @draketungsten, but this goes out to anyone interested of course. First, just saw the rumor here that Marty Friedman may actually sit in with Megadeth in the near future. Shame it couldn't happen as a full reunion while Nick Menza was still alive, and Ellefson wasn't estranged from the band, but still noteworthy I think: blabbermouth.net/news/will-marty-friedman-play-with-megadeth-at-tokyo-concert-next-monthAlso, not that we've ever been made to feel unwelcome in this thread which is of course not genre specific (I do appreciate how cool everyone is here with diverse interests), but just the realization we are a pretty small subgroup of music interest on this board, any interest in a dedicated metal thread of its own (assuming mods don't mind one more music thread as well)?

I don't know the name Nick Menza, and if it weren't for impulse, I wouldn't remember where I heard of Ellefson before. Yeah, I'm metal but with narrow taste - not much of a thrash fan. He turned me around on Megadeth, though. I second the notion of not feeling unwelcome. Nobody's putting metal down, there's just not much interest - to each their own. I have no problem with just popping in here for occasional metal musings, as well as skimming the other postings. OTOH, if anybody is thinking "I don't get enough of Drake posting variations of 'Metal Rules!'", a separate metal thread might remedy that.

I'm always up for endless discussion of all things metal (including various eras and sub-genres), so I feel like I could spam the current thread forever with stuff that might be pretty limited in interest, but again not like anybody is ever uncool about it. On a separate note, I'm going to be sitting in playing guitar with a local band at their rehearsal next weekend. While I normally don't play with bands at all anymore (I keep telling people I'm "retired"), the singer was ever so persuasive so I agreed to jam with them. They are a 3-piece currently (singer/guitar, bass, drums), 60's/70's classic rock. They seem pretty professional, gave me a set list of 16 songs in advance, mostly stuff I've played a million times before (Cream, Hendrix, Zeppelin, ZZ Top, Steppenwolf, AC/DC, Free, Aerosmith, early VH and Priest). It wasn't described as an audition, though in the back of my mind I'm kind of wondering, especially since they are a 3-piece currently. But we'll see (I could be wrong), I'm not interested in joining a band full-time again but a one-off jam could be fun.

News flash-- hair metal retiree sells out to old codgers stuck in classic rock mode.
I'm totally kidding. Although I play primarily original material and traditional celtic/folk stuff in one band, and original material w/ fairly oddball covers in the other band, I'm in absolutely no position to fault anybody for their musical proclivities. The main thing is that you are going to be playing, which is far more stimulating than the alternative, even if it's stuff you can play in your sleep.
As for myself, I'm fairly useless sitting in at classic rock jam sessions, because although I grew up listening to it, I've never been in a band that played it as a primary focus, and I never did much bedroom playing (on guitar) because I never even picked up a guitar until I was 22 and out of college. However, ask me to play the drum parts to "Hair of the Dog" (Nazareth), "Vehicle" (Ides of March), "Black Diamond" (Kiss) or "Wheel In the Sky" (Journey) and I'm pretty sure it would come back almost instantaneously, even though I've largely left drumming far behind me for the last 35 years.
Furthermore, I tend to be like the guy in Sultans of Swing-- strictly rhythm, doesn't want to make it cry or sing. I leave the tweedly-tweedly stuff to the experts, unless we're talking mandolin. I know my mando scales much, much better than my guitar scales.

News flash-- hair metal retiree sells out to old codgers stuck in classic rock mode. You may be kidding, but I think it's absolutely true lol!! The singer is quite a personality, he has what appears to be a really pro set up for recording and jamming at his property, he does a lot of songwriting as well and sent me some WIP clips that sound pretty darn good. And totally a gear head, after discussing the business of jamming, we got onto a whole discussion there (I get pretty nerdy on that stuff as well). It started when he asked if I just wanted to plug into some of his equipment (he's got some nice stuff), and then I showed him a picture of the pedalboard I was throwing together for this one-off jam and he's like "bring that!" You're absolutely right in your comments of course, it's good to keep playing. But my "retirement" has only been from live playing, I've always loved just playing guitar even though my audience now has been one of my cats coming to hear the jam every time I play (he loves Metallica in particular). I just don't want to do the weekend bar band thing, plus I'm a shred style lead player, and prefer more metal stuff. 80's hair metal, Metallica, more alternative 90's metal stuff like Rage Against the Machine is where I'm home. With this set list though, I will get to let loose a little with the solo and some of the fills on the Van Halen version of You Really Got Me, and with ZZ Top's Tush I get to play slide on the lead which is also fun (absolutely love playing slide). And he already knows what he's getting, because I'm still 90's skate fashion 24/7, and I showed him the guitar below and told him this is the main guitar I'm bringing (though I'll have a little more civilized Les Paul with me as well), and he didn't blink. We'll see how it goes!

# 58 - Topo Chico - Robert Ellis
What a weird song to be here. Honestly, I think this probably started out as an algorithm song. But is so damn catchy that I didn't fight the algorithm. Which is pretty true of any song off Robert Ellis' 2019 album "Texas Piano Man."
We've had tons of songs about beer, whiskey, wine, but this is the first I'm aware of about the sparkling mineral water. I've never drunk it...so what do I know. I just know that this is a damn catchy tune.
"Put some ice in a glass Or drink it straight out of the bottle Well, you're gonna be feelin' fine With a tummy full of bubbles"

I hope there is a recording out there. Surely they all know it's a big enough deal to record it. Megadeth with Marty is my absolute dream lineup. If I had a time machine, I wouldn't try to change the past. I'd go attend a Megadeth concert sometime in the 90s so I could see them. I am beyond stoked, and I agree it's a shame Dave couldn't pull off a full reunion before Menza died. He tried with the 2016 album, but it didn't work out. I would be positively delighted to have a dedicated space to prattle on endlessly about all things metal-related with likeminded folks. I agree, it's not that I've ever been made to feel unwelcome in this thread. It's more that I try to spare those who aren't interested from the incalculable lengths to which I can ramble on about this subject. I'd feel a lot less hesitation to cut loose in a dedicated thread. You make it, and I'm there. Even if it's just you and me every day, ha. impulse is more Megadeth than I am, and maybe more Megadeth than anybody in the tri-state area (yes, my tri-state area, and your tri-state area, and yours over there, too). And I posit that if you liked that, there is quite a lot more thrash I could recommend that would fit in with your preferences nicely. And there's never too much "metal rules!!!" by my standards. Yeah, totally agreed. I'm always up for endless discussion of all things metal (including various eras and sub-genres), so I feel like I could spam the current thread forever with stuff that might be pretty limited in interest, but again not like anybody is ever uncool about it. It's me. I'm the limited audience. There are dozens of us! (but like three at this board). Furthermore, I tend to be like the guy in Sultans of Swing-- strictly rhythm, doesn't want to make it cry or sing. I leave the tweedly-tweedly stuff to the experts, unless we're talking mandolin. I know my mando scales much, much better than my guitar scales.
I'm also mostly rhythm. I'd like to learn enough lead that I could improvise a solo for my original playing that sounds just enough like it's more than slamming scales. One day I'd like to do more soloing, but for now, it's riff city. I mean, if you're in a band covering 70s rock, that is certainly the guitar for it.

"that's just pointless speed." I don't understand. Is that one of those made-up phrases, like "too much garlic?" It doesn't make any sense. Nah, I'm actually with you on that. I can get down with super fast stuff when I'm in the mood, but I generally prefer the balanced stuff. I like contrast in my music, so having fast parts contrasted with half time breakdowns, melodic sections, etc, is where most of the magic happens.

Most listened to songs of 2022
# 57 - Harlem River Blues - Justin Townes Earle
The title track off the late Justin Townes Earle's 2010 album. This was Earle's real breakthrough album with him fully realizing his potential as a writer and a musician. (By the way, that's Jason Isbell on electric guitar).
This song is particularly haunting in light of Earle's untimely death in 2020 from a drug overdose following many years of trying to get clean and multiple stints in rehab.
"So I'm taking no chances Carrying over while I'm still good in His grace And I'm no fool, mama, I know the difference Between tempting and choosing my fate
So Lord, I'm going uptown To the Harlem River to drown Dirty water gonna cover me over And I'm not gonna make a sound"
