# 56 - Twistin' the Night Away - Sam Cooke
Another of Cooke's big hits written and recorded by Cooke (with The Wrecking Crew) in 1962. The song went to #1 on the R&B charts and #9 on the Hot 100. Just another super fun party song from Cooke. This one will transport you, through its word choices, to a long gone time.
"He's dancing with a chick in slacks She's moving up and back Oh, man, there ain't nothing like Twisting the night away"

Compare those two songs side by side, and you'll see the massive appeal of Sam Cooke's versatility. What a mercurial songwriter and performer.

My 2nd all-time favorite Sam Cooke song, right behind " A Change is Gonna Come". That one is going to come. Soooo many Sam Cooke songs I love, but as we're talking all-time absolute favourites, "You Send Me", "Cupid" and "Wonderful World" are mine.

# 55 - I Take a Lot of Pride in What I Am - Merle Haggard
I've talked so much about the Hagg. His music was in the background of my entire life. This was the only single released off his 1969 album "Pride in What I Am." Both the single and the album underachieved compared to most of Hagg's 60s output. This song only went to #3 after a string of number one singles. I'm not sure why, because it's a great song that went on to be covered by Dean Martin.
Another great anti-establishment song by a guy whose politics was idiosyncratic to say the least.
"Things I learned in a hobo jungle Were things they never taught me in a classroom Like where to find a handout While bumming through Chicago in the afternoon"

# 54 - You Don't Know Me - Ray Charles
Ray Charles' 1962 album "Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music" shows up somewhere on most lists of greatest albums of all time. This was the second single off the album, having been written by Eddy Arnold and Cindy Walker and recorded by Arnold in 1956. Charles and the album introduced countless people to country music.
"You give your hand to me and then you say, "Goodbye" I watch you walk away beside the lucky guy Oh, to never, never know the one who loved you so Well, you don't know me"

# 53 - America - Waylon Jennings
This was a modest hit for Waylon. It came toward the end of his career and he only had a very small handful at that were bigger in that period (leaving aside his work with The Highwaymen). I was pretty shocked to find that this was written by Sammy Johns of "Chevy Van" fame.
To me this one fits in well with Willie Nelson's "Living in a Promised Land." Both recognize some of the warts that go along with the America that we love. A far cry from the jingoistic garbage that is endemic in modern country music. Which isn't to say it's not without its issues, but its heart is definitely in the right place.
"And the men who could not fight In a war that didn't seem right You let them come home, America"

On this day 50 years ago, Kiss played their 1st show at the Coventry Club in Queens, NY.
I do like the band very much, and Destroyer is one of my favourite albums. I attend a so-called ‘farewell gig’ here in 2017, but I am not sure they are done touring.

# 52 - My Baby Makes Me Gravy - Dale Watson
This one is off Watson's 2011 album "The Sun Sessions," which were originals inspired by the rockabilly sides from Sun Studios. In a lot of hands that would probably sound hokey, but Watson has enough of a retro sound that it definitely works for him. This is just a kind of a silly little song that works as great background music.

# 51 - L. A. Freeway - Guy Clark I mean, c'mon, it's Guy Clark. This is one of Clark's biggest songs. Originally recorded by JJW and then by Clark on his 1975 album "Old No. 1." Written by Clark when he left California for Nashville where he became one of the consummate songwriters of his era. I'm a little surprised it's this low.
"Pack up all your dishes Make note of all good wishes And say goodbye to the landlord for me That son of a bitch has always bored me"

# 50 - Rye Whiskey (1948 single version) - Tex Ritter
One of the great country drinking songs by one of the great singing cowboys. I remember listening to a re-recorded version of this a ton as a kid on the 1966 album The Best of Tex Ritter along with High Noon. This song is just pure fun.
"If the ocean was whiskey (ssss (hic)) And I was a duck I'd dive to the bottom and never come (hic) I meant to say "up""

# 49 - Cupid - Sam Cooke
Another Sam Cooke classic. I was actually pretty surprised to find that this was only a modest hit for Cooke compared to a number of his other songs. It's just such a brilliant R&B/Pop ballad. This song actually did better in the U.K. than in the U.S. going to #7 on the U.K. singles chart. I think it's a song that has grown in stature though as Rolling Stone had it on both iterations of their 500 Greatest Songs lists.
"Now, Cupid, if your arrow make her love strong for me I promise I will love her until eternity I know between the two of us, her heart we can steal Help me if you will"

# 48 - Jamestown Ferry - Charley Crockett
It took me some time to be able to listen to Charley Crockett. His voice is, at best, odd. His phrasing is idiosyncratic. I've heard him called Mushmouth. But there's nobody under the umbrella of Americana/Alt-Country/etc. that works harder than Crockett, except maybe Dale Watson. And he has definitely grown on me.
This cover of the Tanya Tucker hit is from his 2017 album "Lil G.L.'s Honky Tonk Jubilee. I think this song really was a break-out for Crockett. And it's a great interpretation.
"A case of gone was all she carried As she got on the Jamestown Ferry And she said that gone was all she'd ever be"

# 47 - Texas 1947 - Guy Clark This was the first track on side 2 of Clark's debut album "Old No. 1." I didn't realize that Johnny Cash had actually recorded this before Clark on his 1975 album "Look at them Beans." This was, of course, written by Clark. This is the kind of thing that Clark excels at (though he can do almost everything as a songwriter). It's a story about the first passing of a diesel train through a small Texas town, ushering in the end of the steam era as seen by a young boy.
"So we already knowed it when they finally said, "Train time" You'd a-thought that Jesus Christ hisself was rolling down the line Because things got real quiet, mama jerked me back But not before I'd got the chance to lay a nickel on the track"
