# 46 - King of California - Dave Alvin
Dave Alvin is a great songwriter, a good singer and just overall an underrated performer. From his days with The Blasters through his solo career he's been a mainstay of Americana music. The title track from his 1994 album. This is just a great old-fashioned story song that shows Alvin's influences in country and folk traditions. In a just world Dave Alvin would be a big deal.
"Now, the dead man's lying at my feet Who tried to steal my earnings Yet, I still recall your tender kiss Though this bullet in my chest is burning"

# 45 - Mama Tried - Merle Haggard
It's become increasingly obvious as the years go on that Merle Haggard is at the top of my pantheon of musicians. And this is, by most reasonable assessments his magnum opus. While not literally biographical it is an incredibly personal song for Hag, whose father died when he was young and who made his mother's life miserable, culminating in a stint in San Quentin for robbery.
This is simply two minutes and thirteen seconds of country perfection, with its poignant lyrics punctuated by Roy Nichols electric guitar. "Mama tried to raise me better, but her pleading, I denied That leaves only me to blame 'cause Mama tried"

Great choice.
Hag almost looks like he could eat 50 eggs in that get-up on the album cover!

I have no doubt he could have eaten 50 eggs. Especially after he and Willie hung out and got the munchies.

# 44 - Long Black Veil - Lefty Frizzell
Frizzell's 1959 hit (written by Danny Dill and Marijohn Wilkin) became an instant country-folk classic. It was Frizzell's biggest hit in five years and was a conscious turn away from the honky-tonk style he'd thrived on in the face of a changing market. Since then it's been covered by almost everyone.
But it's Frizzell's version I come back too time and again. He conveys the weariness and conviction of the man wrongly accused of and hung for murder. An instant folksong classic.
"The Judge said, "Son, what is your alibi? If you were somewhere else, you won't have to die" I spoke not a word, though it meant my life I'd been in the arms of my best friend's wife"

Despite not being a huge Jagger fan, that particular version is probably my favorite. I dunno, it's probably due to the Chieftains instrumentation and arrangement.
Nothing against Frizzell, I generally love his stuff. But the Cash version just sounds lonelier to me, perhaps due to the lack of instrumentation and reverb.
Nevertheless, Frizzell's version milks the cow for every drop of drama, and he turns in a classic performance.

That version by Cash is outstanding. I'm not familiar with the version by Jagger and The Chieftains I'll have to give it a listen.

# 43 - Highway 87 - Corb Lund Another one off Lund's 2022 album "Songs My Friends Wrote" this is one of two Hayes Carll covers on the album. Lund and Carll are long-time friends and collaborators. I'm a fan of both particularly Lund of late. That said I would not have expected this song to be here, much less this high. I suspect it's because it was released last year and just hit the algorithm right. Still it's a perfectly fine cover.

I missed the 45th anniversary yesterday (damn), but on the 10th Feb 1978, Van Halen released their debut album:

# 42 - King of the Road - Roger Miller.
This was an absolute smash for Miller, going to number one on the country charts and crossing over to an astonishing #4 on the Hot 100. It easily became Miller's signature song.
My mom was a huge fan of Roger Miller and this song (really any of his big hits) are an instant nostalgia wave for me in the very best way.

Yeah, I think I will spin up that VH album today. I've never been a huge VH fan, but I like some, and the power and influence of that is undeniable. It's one of those "and then everything changed" moments.
