I don't know what the odds are of 4 people not only knowing but liking such an obscure band in 2024 congregating on the same thread on the same forum, but I think I should buy a lottery ticket. Clearly we are a community with impeccable taste

I first discovered their debut album at age 12, around 1974. A friend of mine had an older brother who had some great albums (including stuff like Alice Cooper- Killer, Allman Brothers- Eat a Peach, ELP- Trilogy, Humble Pie- Smokin' etc. just to name a few I can recall), and we used to rummage through them and listen to a lot of stuff we'd never heard of (back then, AM radio was still king for anybody under 16). One of them was the original 3D lenticular cover version of Captain Beyond. With such a cool cover, surely the contents within must be just as cool, right? We were not disappointed. We'd turn off the lights in his brother's room, and turn on the black light, lava lamp, and 3-channel color organ light box (it pulsed in time to whatever music you played). and just listen to lots of records. His brother was cool about it and even encouraged us to explore his collection as long as we took care of his stuff.
What a pre-teen trip. I was never personally into the drug part of the stoner culture, but I always loved most of the pop culture aspects-- the music and the visual art- posters, album covers, artwork, the lights, etc.

I was never a big Kris Kristofferson fan, but I've been listening to his early records tonight and they sure are pretty.

I was never a big Kris Kristofferson fan, but I've been listening to his early records tonight and they sure are pretty. His first two albums are just solid gold. At least for songwriting. Everyone, and I mean absolutely everyone, was covering the songs on those albums. From Willie & Waylon to Roger Miller to Ray Stevens to Isaac Hayes to Al Green to Englebert Humperdink to Dean Martin.

I know of Kris Kristofferson from the Blade movie in the 90s, so I didn't even know he was a musician when I first discovered him. His legacy and influence are unquestionable. I'm not familiar with his music, but I will give it a spin in tribute.

Hey Slam_Bradley, @supercat, tartanphantom, berkley, and anyone else who wants to join in...I was fondly thinking about the top 10 album lists we've done in the past and got to wondering whether anyone would be interested in doing a "Top 10 albums that your parents introduced you to that shaped your musical tastes" run down?

I’m down for that. I’ll try to keep it to only three or four Merle Haggard albums.

I'll have to think if I can come up with ten. There's lots of music I was introduced to through my parents' general musical tastes but neither of them were great album-buyers themselves so I'm not sure there are that many specific records I could list. Right now I can think of three or four possibilities off the top of my head, so maybe more will come to me later.

Love the idea of this, but while I enjoyed going through my parents’ vinyl a lot as a kid, similar to Berkley I can only think of 5 albums that ended up shaping my musical tastes. If I added in the 5 most important albums I got myself early on, that would actually tell more the full story.

Or if the rules could be loosened to allow representative albums of artists we were introduced to by our parents, directly or indirectly (which would probably be a greatest hits or best of compilation in many cases). But perhaps all these suggestions are taking things too far away from Confessor's original concept.

I’m not going to speak to potential rules other than to say that more participation and having fun is, to me, the paramount issue.
That said, I’m pretty sure I’m at nine of ten (seven artists). That tenth one is tough. I’ve got a few options at least three of which aren’t music.

same here. I did listen to a lot of my dad's records, but perhaps influenced by only a handful. I may be able to come up with 10. I know I can come up with at least 5.

I like the idea, but I don't know if I can come up with 10 albums. Definitely a few that got me going in the direction I went, though.
