Was the child named McGuffin before it got tossed off the bridge? McGuffin McAllister? 'Tis a fine name.

I think all three things are important. The thing thrown off of the bridge was the singer and Billy Joe's secret illegitimate infant, right? That's why Billy Joe later jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge himself; he couldn't bear the guilt of having committed infanticide. I mean, we all know that, right? So, it's the harrowing heartbreak of the female singer having been forced to kill her illegitimate child, then losing her beloved Billy Joe who she was having a secret love affair with, juxtaposed with the awful nonchalance of her unknowing and uncomprehending family. Bobbie Gentry said that what was thrown off the bridge was left up to the listener's interpretation. Her motivation was to show people’s apathy to the feelings of others. She did say she knew what it was while she was writing the song, but it wasn’t important because the song was about unconscious cruelty and indifference. As best I can find she never told anyone. Sure, but the death of Billie Joe McAllister and what he threw of the bridge has to be harrowingly awful in order for the nonchalance and ignorance of her family to have the desired effect. So, while I don't doubt that Bobbie Gentry's intention as the songwriter was to focus in on the family's indifference, I disagree with the suggestion that Billie Joe's suicide as a result of the singer and he having murdered their illegitimate child is not important. I say that it's fundamentally important because without it the awful indifference and nonchalance of her family isn't as impactful. Changing the subject slightly, has anyone here heard Sinéad O'Connor's cover of "Ode to Billy Joe"? For my money, it's even more haunting than Bobbie Gentry's recording... Incidentally, I visited the Tallahatchie Bridge when I was down in Mississippi in 2019. It's not the same structure as it was in the '60s, as that bridge burnt down at some point, but it is in the same place.

When you put it that way, it sounds like a cheap bottom-shelf scotch blend!

I thought some of us comic/music nerds might appreciate this... Someone - possibly someone from this forum? - posted this on facebook a few months ago. Then, as now, I'll express my bitter disappointment that neither Sunshine Superman nor Hurdy Gurdy Man made a showing.

They got Polythene Pam, but missed Mean Mr. Mustard? Come to think of it, I suppose he and Mr. Pitiful would be arch-villains, so yeah.

I think I get where each one is from except for Independent Woman, can't place that one. Is Apeman from that Kinks song or something else?

I think they should have included the song "Louie Louie", by the Kingsmen, because then there'd be a superhero named Louie Louie.

Probably enough members to form a Substitute Juke Box Heroes Brigade. I'd nominate The Little Old Lady From Pasadena

So, I mentioned in another thread that I went to Zagreb's bookfair today, and among other things I noticed that several vendors were also selling LPs, and the offerings at this particular booth caught my eye and immediately made me think of Slam_Bradley... ...because I know he can't get enough of LiMahl...

It's WILD seeing Willie Nelson looking young. I feel like he's been an ancient old guy my whole life, and I'm in my 40s now...

I have no idea what a LiMahl is. That's not a great album, by Willie and Roger. It's not bad...pretty middle of the road. I do really like the single "Old Friends" which features the two of them and Ray Price. It's WILD seeing Willie Nelson looking young. I feel like he's been an ancient old guy my whole life, and I'm in my 40s now... That album came out in '82, so Willie was 49 at the time.
