I love the Mavericks, and Raul solo is good too, but Mavericks CDs were all killer no filler in my book! If you get a chance there was a short-lived Canadian-based group called The Blue Shadows headed by erstwhile Cowsill from the state of Maine Bill Cowsill. I was very into them around the same time I was buying anything Mavericks. Just type The Blue Shadows into youtube sometime, so many killer originals, and like the Mavericks choice covers across genres! Coolio. I’ll look them up and give them a listen.

Actually might not be enough Blue Shadows on youtube, just looked, but this is a good intro (and Lucky To Me on youtube sounds good even if the vid is really low quality).
Comparisons are made to Hank Williams and the Everly Brothers, with Byrds and Beatles guitars...

#79 - "Somedays You Write The Song" - Guy Clark
Another one from the great Guy Clark. This one goes out to all my creative friends. Some days you write the song. Some days the song writes you.
You can fall You can fly Get low down or get high You can try or just leave it alone. You can search for the way You can curse, you can pray But the words have a way of their own.

#78 - "Let's Take a Vacation" - Joshua Headley
There are probably two contenders for my favorite album of 2018. This comes off one of the two..."Mr. Jukebox" by Joshua Headley (the other will come up later).
I suspect this one comes up because I've just listened to the whole album so much. This has a great Merle Haggard feel to it. Sounds like a love-song cut off one of Hagg's albums in the early 70s.

Rhinestone suits and new shiny cars. Nice song too, actually. The pedal steel makes it though...that high lonesome sound. Headley really does great old-school country. He can do honky-tonk, Bakersfield and countrypolitan. He's still a very well regarded session musician in Nashville. Dude plays a mean fiddle.

#77 - "Gallo del Cielo" - Joe Ely
Unquestionably the greatest song ever written about cock-fighting. Written by Tom Russel (his version is also great) Joe Ely made this one his own. One wouldn't think a song about a rooster would give you all the emotions.

#76 - "Knee Deep in the Blues" - Marty Robbins
This song will show up again later on. Marty Robbins was equally adept at country and his signature cowboy songs. And when all is said and done, with his voice, he could easily have crossed over and been a crooner.
Just a great classic country tune penned by Melvin Endsley.

#75 - "Take Five" - Dave Brubeck
Exhibit two in the list of jazz albums non-jazz people own. This is a great song, but I think it showed up here because of a conversation I had with my youngest son about the difficulty of playing music in odd time signatures. A lot of that went over my head...but that's okay. This is still a great groove.

From that standpoint alone -- never mind the very impressive musicianship on display -- this is a real education for any musician.

From that standpoint alone -- never mind the very impressive musicianship on display -- this is a real education for any musician. My youngest son is a drummer. And he was complaining about playing a couple of pieces with unusual time signatures and we pulled up this album so he could explain it to me. I don't play any instruments and what little I know of music theory is self taught. It really is a great album.

If you are really into that album I recommend finding this Live Brubeck CD, Viper's Nest label...
