I remember that song from that album, we had it when it came out. Dwight was one of those artists you could listen to an entire album without skipping any tracks. I'm a big fan of Dwight Yoakam. His first three albums were absolute gold. Absolutely no let-down from the brilliant debut on "Guitars, Cadillacs, etc." If you ever get a chance, he does a show on Sirius called "Greater Bakersfield." It's a look at the influences on the Bakersfield sound and its influences elsewhere. Always a great show.

Classic song! I was listening to this just yesterday, on the Buddy Holly Story compilation album that was released shortly after his death in 1959. I'm a huge Buddy Holly fan, though this is the only song that made my list, oddly enough. My Dad was a big fan of Holly as well. Dad was 19-21 when Holly was at his peak. This song is just seminal 50s rock & roll. Yeah, my Dad was a big fan of Buddy Holly too. That's how I ended up getting into him. I always think it's interesting that Holly was more successful for much longer over here in the UK than he was in the States. Even though he died in February 1959, he was still having big hits on the British charts up until 1963 or 1964. Buddy Holly really meant a lot to British kids in the late 50s and early 60s, including those who went on to be famous musicians, such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Peter and Gordon, Adam Faith, the Shadows, and, of course, The Hollies, who named themselves in honour of him.

Most listened to songs of 2018
#90 - "Boats to Build" - Guy Clark
There's a surprising dearth of Guy Clark on this list. And a couple of songs that are conspicuously missing. I think that's at least partly due to my listening to more new music than usual this past year.
That said...I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with this song. I love the song. I love the craft and the wording and the message. But I hate that I simply don't take the time or the effort to build the boats that Clark is encouraging me to build.

#89 - "West Coast Town" - Chris Shiflett
This is one I'm not sure I believe. I think Spotify may be messing with me.
I do remember this song coming up on either my Release Radar or on the Discovery deal. And I know I listened to it a few times and the rest of the album. Chris Shiflett is obviously best known for being in the Foo-Fighters. And last year he put out a country album. And you can go around about non-country people putting out country albums, etc.
The album did not light my life on fire. But this is a fairly catchy tune. But I'm still not sure I trust Spotify that it belongs here. But I'm not "un-sure" enough to leave it out.

#88 - "Feeling Good Again" - Robert Earl Keen
This one is a replacement, because I'm pretty well convinced that Spotify was on crack. Spotify had a track off Shooter Jennings' most recent album. I listened to that album a couple of times when it dropped. It's okay, if somewhat pedestrian. But I honestly don't even remember the track that Spotify had here.
This song, on the other hand, I've listened too about 40 bajillion times. I'm a big fan of Robert Earl Keen. And I love the lyrics and the thought behind this song. Keen paints a brilliant picture of someone returning to their true home.
"My favorite band was playin' an Otis Redding song And when they sang the chorus everybody sang along Dan and Margarita were swayin side by side I heard they were divorcing but I guess they let it slide
I wished I had some money with which to buy a round I wished I cashed my paycheck before I came to town But I reached into my pocket and found three twenties and a ten It feels so good feelin good again"

#87 - "Freddie Freeloader" - Miles Davis
It's no surprise that multiple song from Kind of Blue are on this list. What is flabbergasting is that "So What" apparently is not. However that managed to happen, this is a fabulous track on what is my go-to album for pretty much any time and any emotion.

#86 - "Alright Guy" - Todd Snider
I run hot and cold on Snider. I don't ever dislike him, but a lot of his stuff doesn't really jazz me. But this song is a ton of fun. And really...most of us are pretty alright.

#85 - "Highway 40 Blues" - Ricky Skaggs
This one came about because I listened to a fair bit of Skaggs' work when he was named to the Country Music Hall of Fame. A well deserved honor. There's some great instrument playing on this version including Skaggs on mandolin and guitar.

#84 - "The Weald and the Wild" - The Tillers
This one came up on my Release Radar when The Tillers latest album came out. I was not familiar with them, much to my dismay. They do a great string-band, roots, bluegrass thing. Give it a listen. It's good stuff.

#83 - "End of the Line" - The Traveling Wilburys
Not that I wouldn't be listening to a lot of Wilburys anyway. But the death of Tom Petty upped the ante. This is a great song with a spotlight on Petty. And the empty rocking chair with Roy Orbison's guitar in the video just guts me.

#82 - "Unjust Friends" - The Country Side Of Harmonica Sam
I'm not sure if it was this song or another that showed up on my Discovery on Spotify. But the idea of a Swedish band playing traditional honky-tonk country kicks butt. And the fact that they play it very well makes it all the better.

If anyone out there is a fan of Linkin Park, Mike Shinoda just released a solo album called 'Post Traumatic' which is basically him pouring out his feelings about Chester Bennington's suicide in music... it's not the best music ever (definitely sounds alot like Linkin Park) put the emotion is really palpable... it's rare you get that in today's music.

#81 - "Thunderstorms and Neon Signs" - Wayne Hancock
Wayne Hancock is one of those guys I look at and wonder "why the hell isn't he a big star?" Wayne the Train incorporates jazz, big band, western swing, country and rockabilly into incredible polyglot honky-tonk sound.
This is one of his signature tunes extolling life on the road in a band. Just a fabulous song.

#80 - "All That Heaven Will Allow" - The Mavericks.
Raul Malo has one of the great voices in country music. I love The Mavericks blend of country, Latin and rockabilly sounds. This is just a great cover of a Springsteen song.

I love the Mavericks, and Raul solo is good too, but Mavericks CDs were all killer no filler in my book!
If you get a chance there was a short-lived Canadian-based group called The Blue Shadows headed by erstwhile Cowsill from the state of Maine Bill Cowsill. I was very into them around the same time I was buying anything Mavericks. Just type The Blue Shadows into youtube sometime, so many killer originals, and like the Mavericks choice covers across genres!
