So I recently heard that Stan Lee will be making an appearance at a local con this year (Awesome Con in Washington D.C.), and I'm debating whether or not I should try to get an autograph or a photo with him. After attending a number of cons with a celebrity presence over the years, I've arrived at the opinion that getting a photo or autograph from a B/C/D-list celebrity is much more fun than the big name A-listers. The lines are shorter, they don't charge as much, they seem a lot more appreciative, and you can actually have a decent conversation with them. Whereas for the big name guys you get herded through massive lines, shell out three digits in fees, and spend all of about 15 seconds with them before they move you on.
However, I'm debating on making an exception for Stan. I've heard a number of rumors that he will be retiring from the convention circuit soon, which is not surprising at all given his age. He's also one of those creators that I thought I'd never meet outside of going to a major con like NYCC or SDCC, and it turns out that he will be attending a con that's within a 30 minute drive of my house.
So what do you all think? Any of you had the chance to meet him care to comment on the experience?

Met Stan at Phoenix Comicon and did the photo as well and was so worth it as Wesley Dodds said! Just to shake Stan's hand, saying thank you for all that he brought into my youth and letting him know of my appreciation for his endeavors. Also a few many years back a Physical Therapist i worked with bought for my birthday a Spider-Man strip mounted and signed by Stan and his brudder Larry and it hangs ever so proudly upon my bedroom wall. Monument to the history and wonder of comic books legend Stan the Man.

Didn't he do a show last year that they hyped as being his final convention experience?
I had the opportunity to meet Stan a few years back at Pittsburgh Comicon (before WizardWorld took over) but I couldn't justify the price tag. Meeting a celebrity means nothing to me if the exchange isn't a memorable one, and looking at the line to see Stan, I knew there was no way we were going to end up having a meaningful exchange. I couldn't pay $100 just to be a faceless fan in line, being herded through for a quick handshake and signature.

Stan Lee will be at the Emerald City convention next month (allegedly his last appearance in the Pacific Northwest) but I will not be standing in line and shelling out a minimum of $50.00 for a few seconds interaction. I can only take a few hours of these big shows anymore and I'm not going to waste my time. Much as I would love to have a conversation with Stan, that particular set of circumstances is completely without appeal to me. Your mileage may vary.
Cei-U! I summon The Man!

Didn't he do a show last year that they hyped as being his final convention experience? Yeah, I've heard a few different statements to that effect -- that it will be his last time at convention X, that this will be his last year doing conventions on the East Coast, that this will be his last convention ever, etc. I suppose as long as he's in good health and people are willing to fork over enough cash, one can always be coaxed into doing just one more show.

Guy is 94 years old. How many more conventions can he realistically attend?

Didn't he do a show last year that they hyped as being his final convention experience? It was a Canadian Con and it was billed as his last appearance in Canada. I expect he will still appear at his own con (Stan Lee's Comikaze) in LA as long as he owns it/has a stake in it, but he might be nearing the end of his "touring" days. -M

As much as I appreciate Stan for the stories he provided me when I was a wee lad, I have no intentions of paying anyone for their autograph.
