On the Ask A Quick Question thread, Polarbear was interested in having DC put out a TPB of Alex Toth's DC work. This got me to looking on the GCD for Toth's work. This led me to a DC Showcase TPB of the Witching Hour. There is a lot of Toth work in this book along with Neal Adams. However the vast majority of the Toth pages are the one page Intros featuring the hosts of the book. I think there is only one actual story by Toth.
Anyway, I noticed that I don't have a copy of Witching Hour that features a cover and intro pages by Neal Adams. I thought I would get this reprint book to add to my Adams collection. But the prices for this book on ebay are extremely high Imo.
Then I looked for a copy of the original WH issue and it was much cheaper than the WH TPB. So I bought a copy of the original issue in very good condition for well under half price of the cheapest copy of the TPB.
Am I the only one here who is surprised that I could get an original Bronze age comic for less money than a recent reprint?

The Secret Wars Omnibus is a bit like that. It retailed for $100 or so, but the original back issues can be had very cheaply, with the exception of Secret Wars #8, which features Spider-Man getting his black costume. Even with that pricier issue, you can still get all 12 issues for less than the omnibus if you're prepared to shop around.

Captain Marvel #17 2nd printing is much more expensive than the first print, because the 2nd print cover has the "first appearance" of the new Ms. Marvel, Kamala Khan, on it. The story inside just has a couple panels of her hand or something, but the reprint cover is the first tie she's is shown in full. It's... kind of weird.

Batman #608 2nd printing fits in this category.

People were mentioning Crisis on Infinite Earths in another thread. I'm sure there's a deluxe edition of that that's more expensive than the original floppies. Ditto things like collections of Rocketeer or Eightball.

Batman #608 2nd printing fits in this category. One of the things to keep in mind with modern 2nd (and 3rd and 4th and 5th printings) is that the print runs on them are substantially smaller and if there is demand for them via people who didn't get 1st prints and/or completionist collectors who want every cover/edition of the book, there's a good chance that prices will rise on them. If the second category don't jump on though, then the demand won't be there to drive price even with the smaller print run as supply. If a first print sells through 50K or so print run, the 2nd print is probably in the 10-20K range or smaller (some as little as say 5K depending on preorders for the 2nd printing). The demand still has to outstrip the supply before prices will rise, but with the smaller print runs and new cover art, that happens a lot more often and more quickly than it has in times past. -M

Batman #608 2nd printing fits in this category. I had to look that one up, and realized that I was picturing #619 instead. Same story, just the end, not the beginning. I have both the hero cover and villain cover, as well as the 2nd printing for one.

I remember someone saying that this Essential was going for around 175 dollars because it was out of print.

A few years back, I sold my Carl Barks' Greatest Ducktales Adventures vol. 1 (a cheap tpb for which I paid $9.99) for $90 on Amazon. People are so weird about out of print collections.
On the flip side, I cyber stalked the Jack Kirby Fourth World Omnibus vol. 2 and 4 until they came down in price to costing AS MUCH as the originals before I sprang on them. I already had Vol.s 1 and 3 and wanted to be able to read the books in publication order, so the tpbs were more desirable for me (which, otherwise, is never the case).

I can never understand why the comic companies don't release a new printing of those various HC's that jump up in price. They can make a killing.

Rawhide Kid #140 (July 1977) is a reprint book that languishes in quarter bins, unless it's the rare 35-cent variant, in which case it commands prices far in excess of the the three comics it drew material from.

I was going to get the TMNT is the colored 'The Works' collections, but only the 1st one is in print.. 2nd one was over double the cover price. Happily, the 'Ultimate Collection' ones are mapped the same way
