A new figure is throwing their hat in the comics distribution ring, Emerald Comics Distribution. Right now they are in the Pacific Northwest only (based in Seattle) and focusing on indy comics, but they could chip away at Diamond's monopoly and de facto role as gatekeeper to what books can get wide distribution on a national level eventually. article on Comicon.com and here's their website which details their plans for growth... Emerald Comics DistroI wish them luck. Diamond's monopoly is one of the big reasons there is zero room for growth in the industry and why comics themselves remain a niche industry when the comic book properties are big business in the mass culture. It's also an opportunity for a lot of smaller publishers and self publishers to have a route to growth and to reach audiences without Diamond deciding they are too small to be worthy of notice or distribution. The big 5 (Marvel, DC. Image. IDW & Dark Horse) all still have exclusive deals with Diamond, so it will be an uphill battle for Emerald City to make inroads into the superhero crowd and Wednesday Warrior customer base, but there's a lot of room for growth outside that niche market. -M

A monopoly is never good so I'm hoping they succeed.

I'm in the Pacific Northwest and I just e-mailed my LCS and they support this distribution group to get the smaller publishers up and running without any threats at all. There are several LCS are giving them support as well and I hope that they will succeed without any interference from Diamond. That's all I know.

A monopoly is never good so I'm hoping they succeed. There used to be two distributors(?), but Marvel bought one of them out and then simultaneously lost them to Diamond when the comics crash hit When all else fails, blame Marvel There were dozens of distributors. Diamond wasn't even one of the first. At the time of Marvel's acquisition of Heroes World, there was Diamond, Heroes World and Capital. When Marvel bought Heroes World, the other big publishers all went exclusive with Diamond as a result, squeezing out Capital and all the smaller distributors, effectively killing them. That, more than anything handed Diamond it's monopoly. So yes, Marvel acquiring Heroes World was a big factor, but if the other publishers had continued business as usual with the the distribution network rather than all jumping on with eh same distributor, Diamond would not have gotten its monopoly. SO yes, blame Marvel, but blame DC, Dark Horse, Image others at the time for their knee-jerk reaction killing all the other small distributors that were around. -M
