What I had to say on Facebook.
R. I. P. Bernie Wrightson.
I saw this late last night but on the heels of losing Chuck Berry I wanted to sleep and think about Bernie Wrighson without the two coloring each other. When I first started reading comics Bernie Wrightson was still one of the Young Turks who were turning the industry on its ear along with Mike Kaluta, Jeff Jones, Alan Weiss and others.
I didn't read a lot of Bernie's work at that time because I wasn't a horror fan. So I slowly found out about him. I found Swamp Thing and I found the cover and the short stories in the "Mystery" books. As I grew and read I found his influences in Ghastly Graham Ingels. I read interviews with Bernie and his contemporaries...and what comes from them is that he was a very humble and likeable man about whom nobody said a bad word.
Clearly his magnum opus was his Frankenstein. To my mind, there is no question that Bernie gave us the greatest version of Frankenstein ever. The love and care and time he lavished on Shelley's seminal creation was the culmination of a career spent giving us thrills and chills.
Thank you, Bernie for all the hours of fun. Of horrible monsters and frogs on crutches. Of shambling creatures, of terrifying jack o'lanterns and of hosts who were as interesting as the stories they told.

I had the honor of meeting Bernie years ago at SDCC.
He was a quite gentleman.
I have one of his autographed sketchbooks as a priced possession.
While not being the biggest horror fan, I do really love those Bronze Age DC titles he and the gang contributed to, and of course The Studio book with work from him, Jeffrey Jones, Barry Windsor-Smith and Michael Kaluta.
For Swamp Thing alone he'll be greatly remembered.
Yeah, I have to agree probably his best work was that Frankenstein book. That was so intricately done.
Rest In Peace Mr. Wrightson. It was an honor meeting you and thanks for the memories.

The Washington Post had tribute/retrospective for Wrightson too. Not quite as insightful as some of the others, and it focuses on Wrightson's Baltimore roots (local boy angle), but it is nice to see him getting some love from the national media, not just the comic press. -M

Very sad news. BW was an amazing artist, and I have fond memories of discovering his work years ago. A while back, I did get the superb Roots of Swamp Thing HC that came out several years ago, collecting his entire classic run from the '70's. Amazing horror series, and I attest that Bernie's representation of the character was the best version of ST, ever. I know the later AM-written series gets a lot more critical acclaim, but nothing beats the original series.
I did also read the Frankenstein novel (by Mary Shelley) w/Bernie's art many years ago. Very iconic, and to this day when I re-read the story I always think of Bernie's illustrations (even though I haven't read that volume in years). I.e., his art for the book was so amazing that I've associated it with the novel ever since.
It's interesting that BW was from Baltimore, MD. I grew up in that area years ago. As a kid back in the day, the great direct market "Geppi's Comics" stores (which started getting popular in the early '80's) are much of the reason I became a comic fan in the first place.
