How good are the first 90 or so issues of Avengers? I'm wondering if I should branch out into that title.

It's my favorite Marvel title. Issues 2-5 are, in my opinion, the peak of the Lee/Kirby collaboration prior to the introductions of the Inhumans, Galactus, and the Black Panther. The Cap's Kooky Quartet era (#17-25) has its moments but the book doesn't really become a must-read until Roy Thomas starts scripting (#35), especially once John Buscema comes aboard as artist with #41. From there through #71 is solid gold, particularly #54-62 and Annual #2. After that the book has its ups and downs but is generally enjoyable. With #89, the Kree-Skrull War storyline gets underway, not wrapping up until #100.
Cei-U! So, yeah, go for it!

Thanks so much for the review! I'm on board now with that title.

Any thoughts on Iron Man in TOS? I'm really hoping to check that out at some point.

With the Avengers, I've only read the first 40 or so issues and the Skrull-Kree issues from the early '70s, but I find those early issues to be very hit and miss. It's interesting to see Lee and co. building the Marvel universe from issue to issue, but personally, I think early Avengers is a much more flawed series than the likes of Fantastic Four and definitely not as golden as Amazing Spider-Man.
The Kree-Skrull war issues are quite a slog. It's been a few years since I read them, but I remember finding Roy Thomas's dialogue pretty hard going, which I don't usually with him.
Then again, I'm not much of a fan of team books as a rule of thumb, so your mileage may vary.

Any thoughts on Iron Man in TOS? I'm really hoping to check that out at some point. I'm a huge Tales of Suspense starring Iron Man and most of the stories are done very well and I would highly recommend reading some of the books. There is a thread that has some great reviews of some of those books that you've mentioned and I suggest that you should go through that thread and decide on yourself how good of Iron Man in those books. classiccomics.org/thread/2817/captain-america-marvel-review-threadCaptain America in the Marvel Age (A Review Thread)

Except it only reviews the Cap stuff from TOS not the Iron Man stuff. It is a great thread though, and if you are curious about the Cap stuff, check it out. There are a couple of threads laying about of people reading the Marvel stuff chronologically, I know Slam has one and there was at least one other, but they are only update sporadically.

I would have to agree with Cei-U and not Confessor. Avengers from Buscema on, and especially 50 - 100 were terrific. From Ultron and the Vision to The Kree Skrull War, ending with some it fine issues by BWS, it was a great read.

I still think the best of Marvel's Silver Age was Ditko and Lee's Dr. Strange from Strange Tales 110-146. It the best of it for me is better than FF or SPidey, and it's low points are better than the low points of either of those runs.

I can't agree with that, I'm afraid. Nothing can touch Silver Age Spidey for me in terms of its excellent characterisation, awesome rogues gallary, compelling teen soap opera, consistently well written and drawn issues, and its sheer energy and excitement.

The Avengers series is my all time favorite run from any comic company. I break it down like this:
1-196 good to great 197-210- so-so 211-230 The Yellowjacket saga which was great 231-253- nothing too ground breaking 254-300 solid stories including the famous " siege" story. 300 on to 402 - largely forgettable

Avengers is the only long running book dating back to the Silver Age which I made a point of collecting a complete run of; I've any number of shorter run tites, and sizeable chunks of both JLA and the original X-Men, but Avengers #1-402 are the pride of my collection, and with the exception of much of the "kooky quartet" era before Roy Thomas came aboard, I love pretty much all of it. Admittedly, it gets a bit shaky after about issue #299, but the issues between #50 and about #277 are generally stuff I can read over and over again.

I hear so much about the Acengers. I've got to focus my resources, but I've got to take the plunge on the Avengers. Didn't Waid write some issues of it near the end of the original run?
