Variety is reporting that Joss Whedon is nearing a deal to write, direct & produce a solo Batgirl movie featuring Barbara Gordon. No other producers seem to be attached to the project at this time. If any man can do an empowering solo superheroine movie, it will be Joss, so I look forward to this if it comes to fruition. -M

Well from the concept art and bits of the script for his WW movie I have seen, it would have been an empowering female led movie, but it wasn't what WB wanted to plunk their money down on at the time. It didn't fit in with the Nolan Batman and deadbeat dad Superman of Returns they were featuring on the screen at the time and the Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern movie they did instead turned out to be such a great call too, so I don't really pin the failure of that movie to reach fruition on Whedon but on the poor vision of what they wanted out of their DC movies that WB had. -M

Was excited until I saw EW report that it will be based on the Gail Simone Nu52 run. With how joyless the DCEU has been so far, basing this movie off the most joyless and depressing Batgirl run of all time is a big mistake. There are enough good Babs at Batgirl stories to base it on without going for the edgiest version. ew.com/movies/2017/03/30/joss-whedon-batgirl-movie-barbara-gordon/

I don't like it either, but it makes sense. OTOH, the 'Batgirl of Burnside' seems alot more Joss Whedon-y.

Batgirl of Burnside would definitely be the version I'd adapt if I were in charge, either that or Batgirl Year One by Chuck Dixon.

I loved the line in the report that essentially says that movies about female heroes need to be made by women or they would face "greater public scrutiny".
Joss Whedon created, IMO, the most important new female character of the past three decades, one who stood for the empowerment of girls and young women, but nooooooooooo, if someone doesn't have a uterus, then they couldn't possibly write or direct a movie about a female hero.
Ok, if that is how it's going to be, then no women can write or direct movies about male heroes. Gotta make sure we're getting it right, and since they don't know what it's like to be a man, they can sit those ones out.
Gah, I hate our society sometimes.

It might also be an allusion to the reports form his ex-wife alleging domestic abuse and infidelity without mentioning them. The "scrutiny" would bring the spotlight on those things which would negatively affect the movie's potential performance in the current climate. While Whedon's past performance on female properties is good, his personal track record with women has come into question in recent months, and the implication is that any man working on a female targeted property is going to need to have a spotless record in this matter, something Whedon does not have anymore. -M

I tend to avoid Hollywood gossip and "news" as much as I can.

A silver lining to Whedon leaving Batgirl could be author a Roxanne Gay offering to write the film. Variety has an article detailing her exchange with a Warner Bros VP on Twitter.
