Best wishes to George Perez, who recently had a heart attack and underwent surgery over the weekend of East Coast Comic Con. www.bleedingcool.com/2017/05/01/update-george-perez-regarding-health/From the article: "I apologize in advance to those I may disappoint. With this new medical wrinkle added to my past issues regarding my eyesight, there are likely a good number of you feeling a bit sorry for me. Please, don’t be. I’ve had a great run and have been blessed not only with a great career, but also, thanks to all of you nice people buying video games, t-shirts, action figures, collected editions, and watching all those movies and TV shows, my royalty income allows me financial security for life. There are so many of my peers who do not have that luxury. Unfair, but true. So, if these bits of misfortune do need to happen to someone, let it be me. Granted, my output may be curtailed, but I will still be drawing, and loving it as much as ever. Thank you all for caring." Class act all the way.

George Perez is one of my favorite artist despite some of you here don't think highly of him. I love his work on Wonder Woman and among others as well. I'm hope that this heart attack will soon be a thing of the past. I wish him a speedy recovery and I've consider him a class act by himself. He is a legend in our Comic Book Community and I admire his work always.

Get well Mr Perez. I get choked up with this news and the death of Berni Wrightson as i did with the death of David Bowie. These gentlemen were my childhood.

Get well, Mr. Perez! I swear the man should be eligible for sainthood. And thanks, Randle-El, for posting this.

Best wishes for a full recovery!
I met Perez some years ago at HeroesCon and he was gracious, funny, and a pleasure to talk with.
In fact, given when I really got into comics as a kid in the 80s, whenever I think of DC, Perez comes to mind first and foremost. One of my all-time favorite artists.

Far beyond his amazing talents as an artist, he is a decent man with a big heart. Always rare to find.

Back in 1984, I was at the San Diego Comic Con shopping around a proposal for my comic book "Baer & Bear." Some of my pages needed to be finished, and I was desperately looking around the showroom for a flat surface where I could work. Not only did George Perez graciously give up some of his own precious table space, he even helped me out by penciling in the backgrounds in a few panels in my style!. The man was and is a true gentleman and a colossal talent. I wish him a swift, full recovery.
Cei-U! I heart George!

Sorry to hear about his medical problems but glad to hear he's in good shape financially and gets royalties from some of the products derived from his work. And on a more selfish note, I'm also relieved to hear he'll still be able to keep working!

Get well, Mr. Perez! I swear the man should be eligible for sainthood. And thanks, Randle-El , for posting this. If not sainthood, at the very least some kind of lifetime achievement award. In all the things I've read and heard about George Perez, I've never heard anyone have anything bad to say about him. He's a great example of how it benefits creators in the long run to make a connection with their fans. Sure, he's one of the legends in the industry, but it seems like a lot of folks continue to have a lot of love for his work because he's just a nice guy. Incidentally, did George Perez have some kind of exceptional work-for-hire contracts that enabled him to reap such rewards on royalties? I've heard of other creators getting some payments for the intellectual property they created that gets adapted or licensed out, but my understanding was that it's usually not much.

Perez work on New Teen Titans was the first book DC offered royalties on. Since then Perez has worked on many high profile books that continue to remain in print & are top sellers. COIE, his JLA & Avengers work. Wonder Woman. Superman after Byrne left. Legion of 3 Worlds. Hulk: Future Imperfect.
You would make a decent amount from these high profile books.
Example: Byrne received a royalty check for Alpha Flight #1 for $32,000. Alpha. Flight. Not a high profile title like COIE. No merchandising. Just straight sales of the book.
I wish Perez a speedy recovery.

Wolfman and Perez were in on the earliest DC royalty contracts, which included merchandise and tv and movies, derived from their work. Aside from royalties off of big DC and Marvel sellers, I would suspect the Titans cartoons and merchandise offer up some decent dough; plus, the use of Deathstroke, in Arrow, and elsewhere.
Some of the guys who were there earlier didn't get those kinds of contracts and in later years, it sounded like the royalty contracts were restructured to make them even more favorable to the corporation.

Perez is now and always has been a class act all the way.
World class artist and storyteller from Marvel to DC and spots in between. I've never heard a bad word about the man.
Best of luck and a healthy recovery to one of the industry's best !
So glad we're not reading another obit.

One of my fondest comic memories from childhood is reading DC Comics Presents #26 and seeing the gorgeous New Teen Titans art. Not to short other TT artists (Nick Cardy will always be my favorite), but George Perez's art brought the team to a new generation of readers. His work on Wonder Woman, Avengers, and Justice League of America is outstanding. Get well soon Mr. Perez!

Some of the guys who were there earlier didn't get those kinds of contracts and in later years, it sounded like the royalty contracts were restructured to make them even more favorable to the corporation. Yeah, my question was based partly off of knowing that a lot of creators had royalty deals in place, but they didn't seem like they were that lucrative. And these weren't C-list creators either... guys like Mark Waid and Gerry Conway. Conway wrote a blog post a while back complaining about the DC royalty system and how they will not pay a creator for certain characters because they are considered "derivative" (e.g., Power Girl is derivative of Superman and therefore not a truly original character), but then they won't pay the creators of the original non-derivative character either. There was another blog post by Mark Waid where he said that he got a royalty check every now and then for Impulse that was enough to go out for nice dinner, but that was it. So I know creators get royalties and that there are deals in place, but Perez seems like he got an exceptional deal if he's set for life based on royalties alone.
