My only wish is that people demand more accountability from our leaders who use military force, before peaceful diplomacy has really had a chance and that they put pressure on their representatives to remember their responsibilities to veterans and properly fund the VA system and make it do its job. That would be thanks enough for me. Could not agree more. Didn't know my biological father all that well growing up, but apparently he was in the army for a time and even stationed in Germany as a therapist to help returning Vietnam vets recover from PTSD. And one of my dearest friends who was incredibly influential in helping me become the person I am today was a jarhead in the Iraq war and she is absolutely venomous when it comes to the government's treatment of war vets

I haven't read the modern comics and thought the first film was a decent popcorn movie. Nothing too deep (apart from scenes with the mother, which was about as deep as it got), with a great soundtrack that reminded me of my youth. Haven't seen the second one yet. I loved the original series, from the moment I first encountered them in the Defenders. They were a nice blend of superheroes and Star Trek, with the battles against the Badoon making for exciting space opera. The Marvel presents stuff got pretty gonzo and the Korvac Saga starts well; but peters out when Perez leaves (and got sidetracked just before that). The Marvel Two-in-One wrap ups were good. The Valentino stuff, from the 90s wasn't bad, though it also was better at the start. To me, it isn't the Guardians without Yondu, Charlie 27, Martinex Starhawk and Vance Astro. Nikki made a nice addition. Then again, watching the Defenders trailer, I just sat there thinking, "I want Nighthawk, Valkyrie, Hulk, and Dr Strange." Can I double like this post ?

The original Guardians will always be the real thing, for me-loved them as a kid, particularly the Gerber stuff. I liked a lot of the Dan Abnett stuff, but it was really GOTG in name only, and I really don't like the more recent stuff. I particularly hate the rebooting of Starlord's history and personality; I much preferred the original 70s space opera version. The first movie was fun (haven't seen the second) but bears no resemblance to the comics anyway...

Gerber's take on Guardian's is what helped "launch" them back in the 70's so that is the one i grew up with and enjoyed. But the truth be told outside of being participants in some wonderful stories in other team's series the Guardian's and their series were just a part of the greater Marvel cosmic universe that never quite managed to catch on. Starhawk was a significant addition for the team and after him pretty much bleh for the most part.
The Valentino Guardian's series was quite fun if nothing spectacular as he used their connection to the Marvel universe to explore the future incarnation's and legacy of the modern Marvel heroes. But the team itself again wasn't that great of a deal within the series as it was the future versions of heroes and villains that seemed to carry the series.
Abnett and Lanning were on a roll creating a new updated version building upon Giffen's recreation within the Annihilation mini but that was cut short...
While i like the original Vance, Yondu, Martinex, Charlie-27 and Starhawk iteration there just hasn't been enough done with them to enjoy. They could be great, just never really given the time to grow with a writer and artist in providing them the cosmic grandeur they deserve.

I LOVE the original Guardians. I love their look, and their story. I'd love to get and read every Bronze Age appearance of them, if I could. I did actually collect the Abnett & Lanning title from 2008, and enjoyed it, and I also enjoyed the movie. However, if I had to choose one over the other, I'd go for the Bronze Age originals.

While i like the original Vance, Yondu, Martinex, Charlie-27 and Starhawk iteration there just hasn't been enough done with them to enjoy. That's my impression too. I got to know the original Guardians thanks to their appearance in Defenders and Avengers, and although I enjoyed the space opera aspect of their adventures they weren't favourites of mine. The Valentino series I never tried seriously. I was under the impression that it took the Guardians and matched them with future versions of current Marvel characters, but without a convincing overall description of what the future history of the MU would be. It might be harsh, but I viewed it as a longer version of What if..? volume 2, with stories that could be fun but were in the end unimportant to the overall Marvel universe. For me to care more, that series should have been the Marvel equivalent of Legion of super-heroes. The new Guardians that came to be in the wake of Annihilation: conquest, though, were something else again. It combined a few favourites of mine and was brimming with cool concepts and story potential. (It was marred by too many company-wide events, but managed to hold its own). A sensible way to make Adam Warlock powerful, mysterious and yet naive? Count me in. Lovecraftian space baddies? I'm there. A home base located in the severed head of a Celestial? Holy high concept, Batman! Bug? BUG? This is so cool. Even the links with the first Guardians worked flawlessly, and this new team was firmly entrenched in the Marvel Universe's cosmic mythology, complete with the future timelines of Kang, of Killraven, and of the Badoon invasion. Hey, even Vance Astro was there...

Marvel has 2 TPB's out (called Guardians of the Galaxy: Tomorrow's Avengers)collecting all of the Bronze age Guardian stuff, from their MTIO appearance with Captain America, through the Defenders appearance and into their own series and then their crossover into the Avengers during the Korvac story and then a few last MTIO. Both are listing on Amazon for around $25 or less if you don't mind used. Guardians of the Galaxy: Tomorrow's Avengers - Volume 1 Paperback – January 22, 2013 $25.63 Guardians of the Galaxy: Tomorrow's Avengers, Vol. 2 Paperback – March 6, 2013 $26.84

Agreed and I adore the "Space Owl" costume However, in my mind, the Englehart version will always be the definitive interpretation

One recent thing I miss is the WWI-style helmet Star-Lord wore during the DnA era. It was redesigned for the movie and has kept the glowing round eyes, but the original version was so much cooler. Its revamping is (as usual) kind of generic; more like what people expect a space hero to wear than the weird thing it was at first.

My reading of the GotG has been very limited. My first exposure to them, I believe, was: Starhawk, definitely a unique design to say the least. Although I don't think I have that issue anymore (Oddly enough, none of the kids in my neck of the woods had a lot of Guardian appearances either so I never had the opportunity to trade for any of them) I did like their appearance/action in the Korvac Saga but that's about it. Now that line-up, with Starhawk, Yondu, Vance, Charlie-27 and such, to me, that IS the Guardians whenever I think of them.
