I get all the criticisms of Feldstein as an artist. Too stiff. Too cartoony. Faces that land squarely in the center of the Uncanny Valley. Unimaginative perspective (or exploitative in this case, as the "camera" seems to be centered on Junior's crotch*). I still find covers like these enormously appealing. There's a precision to the draftsmanship and an almost obsessive attention to detail that I find very satisfying. *ETA: This would appear to be an early example of the phenomenon of "man-spreading," a term that is used to describe some men on public transportation who sit with their legs wide apart and seem unmindful of their fellow passengers' comfort or space. #themoreyouknow |
