Any fans of Renegade Press? I'm about to dive into reading their series WORDSMITH, which I believe won an award and was even mentioned back then as one of the greatest comics ever. Well, at least a few times it was hailed as such. I really liked SILENT INVASION, also a Renegade book.

I have scans of a few items and will probably cover them in my Other Guys thread. Wordsmith was excellent. They also provided a home for Ms Tree, carrying high that torch.

I'm on issue 3 of Wordsmith right now. I own and have read that entire Ms. Tree run that they published. One of my favorite series.

The publisher of Renegade, Deni Loubert (her name at the time) wrote an editorial that was on the inside of the front cover of each of the company's comics every month. I've read those editorials every time I've read a Renegade comic. I'm really convinced she was somewhat of a visionary, as she so often spoke of wanting to develop the market for non-superhero black and white comics. In the long run I guess it didn't work for her, but she certainly showed a lot of ability as a publisher. Of course she had been married to Dave Sim and seen what he (they, to some extent?) had done with Cerebus. Still, she proved to be an outstanding publisher I thought, and Renegade is a publisher I'm quite fond of.

Deni Loubert is a largely unsung figure in comics. She was a major factor in Cerebus getting published and pretty much ran the publishing side of Aardvark-Vanaheim, until the couple split. She then set up Renegade as a home for some of those displaced properties (though Sim describes it differently). The company ran into the same problems that most small press did; cash flow, crowded out of the market, disinterested shop owners, lack of profile among comic fans, publishing too many titles, etc... One factor in her lower profile (apart from Renegade being gone so long) was the acrimonious divorce from Sim. He was the star, so he gets the interviews. He dumps a lot of stuff on her, in certain interviews and editorials and she has said things in a few interviews about his behavior. Suffice to say, she had good editorial and publishing skills, though she let enthusiasm for the medium overtake sound business practices. She wasn't alone in that in the 80s and 90s.

I really loved Wordsmith, but don't think I invested in many of their other properties.

Doing a little checking, they produced 43 titles ! Most didn't last past a couple of issues, but that's about 30 more titles than I remember.

"I hope to present to you as many different kinds of stories, and as many new interpretations of the myths of life as I can at Renegade."- Deni Loubert, in her editorial that graced the inside front cover of November, 1986 Renegade comics.

Anyone here try Normalman? Yeah, I picked up the original trade collection of it, after seeing it in a local shop. Pretty good stuff, though not quite as funny as you wanted it to be. Really, I preferred Valentino on this kind of stuff (and Touch of Silver) far more than any of his superhero work (Guardians was decent, Shadow Hawk was forgettable). It would swing between some really funny stuff and just mildly amusing. The Tick and Lethargic Lad were more consistently funny; but, normalman was really good when it hit the mark and still entertaining when it missed.

I've got most of the issues. Can't wait to finally get my collection sorted later so I know what's what where A sorted collection? INCONCEIVABLE!!! Collections are meant to be disorderly and piled up awkwardly in a haphazard manor waiting to tumble over into a vastly far messier pile of confusion. What kind of sicko are you trying to have your collection sorted out and knowing where things are? You poor delusional fool...
