I learned about this Voltron Soul of Chogokin GX-71 toy a few months ago and sadly it's a bit too pricey for me. That being said this may be the greatest Voltron toy ever created. It's 27cm tall die-cast figure that breaks down into all five lions and comes with tons of accessories and a figure stand. Here's one of the better reviews of this figure. and here's one of the product shots from BigBadToyStore.com

I always felt the original was perfection. Granted, the black lion was a little too fat, but that was a small price to pay for a heavy, awesome looking toy with simple, kinesthetically satisfying transformations. While I like the look of the SOCs, they are often too complex for my tastes. Same with the Masterpiece Transformers. Give me something engineered ingeniously enough to completely change its form in five or six simple steps. If it takes me thirty minutes to transform the thing, I'm never going to want to do it.
Okay, to prove my point (and because I felt like it) I pulled my original Voltron off the shelf, transformed it into the five lions, savored the view for a moment, and transformed it back, all while humming the theme song in my head and totally savoring the nostalgia. Elapsed time: 2 minutes, 18 seconds. I don't want to have to work to transform the thing -- this was perfect.
So, if you don't have the original, you can get it on ebay for a fraction of the SOC's cost. Of course, I do understand that, as an artist, there's an asthetic quality to the SOCs (and this one in particular) that you are appreciating and I am downplaying. Still, I think there's a simplistic beauty in the original.
Now, if they do an SOC Vehicle Voltron next, I may have to reconsider. That one was always my favorite, but the transformation was less satisfying, the pieces broke easily, and it was all plastic.
By the way, this topic inspired my new avatar.

Got to look at one up close at the Phoenix Comic con. What an incredibly beautiful figure! The detail and sheen made this giant robo shine brightly. Was truly stunning. Personally waaay beyond my price range but i can see why this one is a collector's item dream come true...really spectacular.

shaxper when you say the original are you referring to the 80s Matchbox line? I seem to remember quite a few variations they put out at the time. Mostly die-cast too. I remember a figure at about 6 inches that didn't separate into the lions but IIRC came with the sword and shield. Then I remember at least two larger versions that broke down into individual lions. One of which came with small actions figures of the pilots that actually fit into the cockpits. I had the one that didn't have the action figures as accessories.

I mean the original DX metal version, which did not have the figures. It was actually an inferior re-release of the GoDaiKin GoLion, which was itself an American re-release of the Chogokin GoLion DX. Basically, the first two versions came with more accessories and shot missiles. But it was just an extremely solid figure and beautiful design, regardless of which version you got. Granted, it couldn't do the cool poses the SOC can do, but it looked so majestic that poses didn't even seem necessary. It's taller than the SOC and possess more die-cast metal too.
