I'm beginning to see a light at the end of the tunnel. We're up to the Ts Stranger In A Strange Land 1989 Rip Off Press-Neither a Heinlein or Leon Russell adaptation but Bruce Bolinger's autobio story of a 40 year old hippie who had worked in commercial arts and now wants to try his hand with underground comics. A fish out of water somewhere in the deep south bible belt.Couldn't find a cover image but he also did alot of work for Cracked magazine Strips 1989-1990 Rip Off Press Chuck Austin's comic . Soap opera sex shenanigans. A poor man's Omaha with human characters. The stories are threadbare and he tries to avoid drawing backgrounds as much as possible. I'd post a cover image but its not worth getting into trouble with Shax. Its not something I would go out of my way to defend Tales From The Fridge 1973 Kitchen Sink by Russ Jones and Bhob Stewart. A real fine looking EC type book containing The Fridge Of Fear,Dork Tracy,Flesh Global and Global McBlimp 1 pagers Tales From The Leather Nun 1973 Last Gasp Dave Sheridan's character heads a Robert Crumb story. Spain and Jaxon do nun stories too.Pat Ryan and Rober Brand wraps things up Thats an image of a 3rd printing. The 1st printing didn't cover up her chesticles

I'm glad I have a 1st printing of Leather Nun. And the H's and I's: Heart - the first of two comics written, drawn and self-published by John Aulenta. This is the weaker of the two comics, but there are two stories in here that I'll never forget. High Adventure - cover and 2 stories by Robert Kline, a story written & drawn by Mike Royer, a story drawn by John Pound & Steve Leialoha, and all scripts by Mark Evanier except for the Royer story. This has no drugs, sex or humor, it's a pretty straightforward sword & sorcery comic without the constraints of the Comics Code. Hydrogen Bomb and Biochemical Warfare Funnies - cover by Gilbert Shelton, inside is more Shelton, Crumb, Sheridan, Deitch, Jaxon, Irons, Williams, Schrier, Sturgeon & Wilson. Classic underground social & political satire. The cover picture of "America's Three Most Popular Men" features Nixon, Agnew and Billy Graham. The Incredible Rocky vs. The Power Of The People - all by Joel Andreas. This is one of the weirdest and most obscure of undergrounds. The entire book is dedicated to attacking Nelson Rockefeller and his family. You can even read it yourself at this link: archive.org/details/TheIncredibleRockyVs.ThePowerOfThePeopleFeaturingAmerikasRichestInner City Romance - The city is Oakland, and Guy Colwell definitely keeps it real. Very well done stories and art. If you want to feel what urban America was like in the early 70s, read these. I have the first two issues (of five). Ish already posted #2, here's #1. Both are excellent, #2 is unique in that the script is all in rhyme.

Happy Friday dudes and dudettes.Got more undergrounds for you Tales Of Sex And Death #1 1971 A Print Mint Publication A hysterical Superboy parody called Soupygoy by Justin Green whereby Clark just can't stop using his X-Ray vision in school. Kim & Simon Dietch,Bill Griffith ,Rory Hays, S Clay Wilson and Roger Brand complete the cast .A very funny book. The image for issue #1 was much too tiny to bother with posting Tales Of Toad and Other Stories #1-1970 Bill Griffith and his horney Toad character star in this book. #3 includes Zippy The Pinhead Time Twisted Tales 1986 Rip Off Press-SF anachronisms by Dave Sheridan. 3 separate stories. I just can't find an online cover image.A shame, its a good looking book Tits & Clits Comix 1972 by Lyn Cheyli and Joyce Sutton .An early underground from the female point of view The Tortoise And The Hare 1971 Last Gasp-Gary Hallgren,Dan O'Neill,Shary Flenigan,Bobby London and Ted Richards. Another batch of undergrounds before most of you go back to your Mon-Fri routines Viper #1 1985 Rip Off Press -A book that has something to do with a French comic called Viper. But this one also has American contibutors like Paul Mavrides,Dori Seda,Carol Lay and Mike Matthews. There is a 3 page Moebius story too Vulgar Vince #1 from Throb Comics no year apparent but probably late 1980s. Patrick Finney is the writer/artist/editor and publisher. An underground or an independent comic? I'm not too sure, it could go either way. Humourous and vulgar, a heroic parody. For some reason I put it in the box with my undergrounds.Sorry for the small image but its the only one I could find Weird Smut Comics #1-3 1985-1989 John A. Mozzer Publisher-A mixture of underground/porn. It got more underground after the 1st issue #1 Some smutty stories by people I never heard of plus porn star pinups. But you also get contibutions from S. Clay Wilson and the legendary Bill Ward #2 More unknowns but also Milton Knight,Bill Ward,Dori Seda,Larry Welz and Spain #3 Spain cover and story.Larry Welz and Milton Knight I didn't know there was a #4 and its probably the only one I can post

Okay, N thru P: New Legends - Robert Gould, Thomas Canty, Eric Kimball, Brian Cody, all art students in Boston when they did this. All went on to pro careers and did no more undergrounds. One of the few underground covers to show a Kirby influence. O. K. Comics Oscar Kabibbler and Li'l Farquahard in Crumb-esque stories by Bruce Walther. Paradise, An Interplanetary Fantasy written, drawn & published by John Aulenta. I think this is a forgotten classic but I seem to be alone - even Scott Shaw! wasn't familar with this oddball undergound. At first it seems to be an anthology of different stories set on different worlds with different art styles and emotional tones. Gradually, as you read, you start to see interconnections between the worlds of the various stories. By the end, the reader can see what none of the characters can see - that ALL of the stories are interrelated. I've never read anything like it. Pork - digest size, all by S. Clay Wilson. Can't show the cover here. Psychotic Adventures - I only have the third issue (of three). Mostly by Charles Dallas, with a story adapted from A. Merritt and one of his own, and a third story by Larry Todd. Really good horror comic. Pure Joy - Sexy humor from Rich Chidlaw, Jim Himes, George DiCaprio, and others.

There were 11 issues of Xxxenophile, ten from Palliard and one from Studio Foglio. It was a fun, positive series that managed to be sexy w/out being sexist. NSFW and all that, but a great series.

Weirdom Comix #15 1972 Weirdom Publications-Were there really 14 prior issues? I think most of the early issues were fanzine format. XXXenophile #1-3 Palliard Press Phil Foglio wrote and pencilled this series . 3 stories per issue of a sexual sort involving humans or devils, SF aliens or furry creatures. Phil employesd a revolving team of inkers including William Messner-Loebs,Mark Nelson,Doug Rice,Hilary Barta,Matt Howarth,Gordon Purcell and more I met Phil Foglio when we were both in high school and were involved in an SF club at the local library. He was a pretty impressive artist at the time, with a distinctive style and ability to draw off-the-cuff in ink w/ no sketching.

The March Of The Undergrounds is winding down Yellow Dog- The numbering is a bit confusing. On the cover it says Vol 2 # 13. The indicia says Vol 2 No 2 Issues no's 13 & 14 July 1969. Whatever it is, its got a Crumb cover along with Greg Irons,Jim Osbourne, a Chuck & Bob Crumb story, the origin of Captain Guts by Larry Welz,J Lynch's Nard N' Pat and other stuff Next is a cover saying #15 with the indicia claiming Vol 2 No 3 Issue 15 Aug 1969. An Irons cover,a 12 page Harvey Kurtzman story, plus Welz,Lynch,Iron ,Justin Green and more hippies Then a comic with 18 on the cover and indicia of Vol #5 issue 18. Irons cover & story,Roger Brand,Joel Beck,Bill Griffith and more Finally a plain #22 from 1972 with lots of very weird art from folks whose names I haven't seen before. All in all an interesting series Yer Basic Comix 1980 all by Jim Valentino . All different types of stories but definitely not Normal,Man. In the Rs and Ss there's some overlap between Ish's collection and mine. Rowlf by Corben, already posted by Ish. Schizophrenia by Vaughn Bode, both Ish and comixjoint.com list it under 'C' for Cheech Wizard, so maybe I'll re-file it too. Show & Tell Comics - all Justin Green, not as famous as Binky Brown but similar autobiographical tales of a neurotic child. Skull Comics - one of the classics of the horror genre, with a long list of contributors. I have issues 2-6 (of 6) and Ish already posted the cover of #2, so here are 3-6. Covers by Spain, Jaxon, Spain again and Greg Irons. Sleazy Scandals of the Silver Screen - one of my favorites. I have the original digest-size version, with the same nude Marilyn cover that Ish mentioned. Slow Death - Last Gasp's first title. Ish posted #4, 6 & 7; I own 2-5, 7 & 8. So here are 2, 3, 5 & 8; by Jaxon/Sheridan, Corben (signing as "Gore"), Rand Holmes, and William Stout. Smile - the first title from Krupp Comic Works. #1 is all by Jim Mitchell; #2 features strips that Krupp syndicated to underground & college newspapers, including work by Mitchell and Denis Kitchen. Spasm! - the only underground by Jeff Jones, later known as Jeffrey Catherine Jones, and it's a shame it's the only one. Sphinx - this is the predecessor of Eternal (see my post earlier), by the same creator, John Thompson, who also did Ish's The Kingdom of Heaven is Within You before Sphinx. Beautiful, unique art and stories. I have only issue #3; for strange reasons, #1 was drawn but never published, so there are only 2 issues.

Undergrounds can be viewed as the bizarro version of mainstream comics. If Action Comics is considered the first culturally significant series then its only appropriate that the underground version was at the opposite end of the alphabet. Siegel and Shuster had to contend with many rejections as they tried to sell their Superman character to newspaper syndicates. Robert Crumb just took a bunch out to the street and hawked them himself. Neither Action nor Zap were the first of their type but both were the catalyst to the explosive growth that would soon occur. Zap began as a solo Crumb project. He submitted his first issue to a printer who immediately closed shop and took off with the original art. So it was back to the drawing board for Crumb for a different #1. After the 2nd issue was published, Crumb found a copy of the original version and had it printed as a #0. He then expanded the page count to 52 pages and took in work from Rick Griffin,Victor Moscoso,S Clay Wilson,Spain,Gilbert Shelton and Robert Williams for the rest of the run Zap #1 copywrited Nov 1967 and sold on the streets of SF via a baby carriage by Crumb. Whiteman,Mr Natural ,Eggs Ackley,Shuman the Human and that Keep On Truckin' guy make their debuts (I think) #2 1968 Victor Moscoso ,Rick Griffin and S Clay Wilson join Crumb to make it a 52 page comic #0- The artwork for what would have been #1 was found and finally published . Copy dated Oct 1967 #3- 1968 Gilbert Shelton and his Wonder Wart-Hog joins the gang #4 1969 More from the whole gang and Joe Blow by Crumb #5 1969 I see Robert Williams has joined the group. I also found a paper receipt between the pages dated Feb 23,1973 for the cover price of 50 cents #6 1973 Spain is now on the team #10-1982 It's Crumb,Spain,Moscoso,Wilson and Williams 15 years after the beginning #12-1989 The whole gang reunites for the last issue I own. I believe a #15 came out about 10 years ago Thanks to all for your comments, expertise and other cover posts.A big thanks to Rob Allen for helping to fill in the gaps. Keep On Truckin' Freak Brothers
