As Matt Smith's Doctor would say capes are cool. Especially if you have a cape like Devil Slayer that is Psychokinetically "alive" and malleable as well as a portal to unlimited weaponry! Even wrestlers know capes are cool and create theirs as part of their showmanship coming down to the ring! Similar to that, has there ever been a character who wears a cape when s/he's "on patrol," posing for covers, doing experiments, hanging out in the cave/satellite/mansion, etc., but takes it off before getting into a mano-a-mano scrap with someone? Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman would be seen wearing a "ceremonial" cape for publicity and out about town as a part of her "costume" at times.

Batman, off the top of my head, seems to be the one superhero where a cape is at least functional, in that it is part of what makes him look scary and demonic, to a degree. At least as far as Silver age to present, where the whole "strike terror" into criminals became a thing.
Otherwise, capes I can take em or leave em.

Plus I really rocked riding my bike around town with a bath towel tied around my neck when I was a kid . Or was that last week?

Why can't a cape be useful for both?

Just ask Dollar Bill what he thinks of capes... Cleary, you all are not up to date on modern day advances in Cape Safety Technology...

If you can't see where their hands are and cannot adequately size up their physique, they automatically have something over you and, thus, are visually more powerful/intimidating. Anything could be going on under that cloak, and therein lies the mystery and intimidation. I think that's exactly why you never see Superman eclipsed by his cape -- it doesn't suit the character.Superman started using the "eclipsing" and "unlimited weaponry" factors with his new cape...

Yeah, it's part of the superhero genre so I don't really care if it makes sense or not. Though I still think Moon Knight should lose the Batman cape. Weel, I suppose he has, in a way, since they're going more and more with the white suit and mask now, which I'm fine with. But I'd like to see Don Perlin's original glider-cape make an occasional appearance for old-time's sake. I think capes were part of the standard derring do costumery of the 20s and 30s - Flash Gordon and Prince Valiant (who both preceded Superman) wore capes - and all those swashbuckling hero types played by Errol Flynn - so when Superheroes came along it was only natural they would wear them too. From an artist's point of view capes are great. Instant dynamism and - make the thing big enough - less annoying detail to fill in in the background. A good swirling cape in a close up can cover whole city blocks. I know which I would prefer to draw.

junkmonkey - Your point that you prefer to draw is priceless. Agreed, but I also must commend you on the new avi of a wonderful slavic goddess thespian! who'd look great in a cape. Just wish she hadn't lost so much Jane Mansfield-ish weight since The Spirit... Rapid weight loss ages the face horridly; her face, and her talent via micro-expressions, is sublime.
