Folks, I've been looking forward to this one for about two years ever since Ennis let it be known that this was one of his next projects. Anything warfare/Frank Castle related with Ennis' name on it is a MUST BUY for me. 'The Platoon' is going to be a series focused on Castle's first tour in Vietnam, long before he transitioned into the Punisher. If you've read any of Ennis' War Stories or either of his Punisher runs...you know this is his wheelhouse. The Punisher MAX 'Born' mini covered Frank's 3rd tour leading right up to him returning home, but this series is going to take you back to the very beginning when Frank was a young, green marine and had never killed a man in his life. Looks like it'll be hitting the shelves pretty soon www.bleedingcool.com/2017/07/14/axel-alonso-garth-ennis-goran-parlov-vietnam-punisher-comic-platoon/

You realize this will be an anti-war comis, right? Of course We never should've gotten involved in Vietnam in the first place.

I read this recently, and this has to be the best big two title I read since I don't know how long, and the best Ennis title in years as well. The arrt was gorgeous, abiding to all the rules you expect from a great Alex Toth comic, and it told its story in a fairly original way. Parlov is one of the very best artist when it comes to action, and Ennis finds the perfect balance between emotion and geo-politics. His female protagonist could (should?) have been "more" characterized, but then again, htis book is about the urgency in war, survival reflexes, finding brothers in arms to se ethe next day, in the middle of a war you haven't chosen to be part of. What's quite intriguing is how Ennis inserts himself in the narrative, looking for the founding moment of what came to be the Punisher. But as an echo to his early works about the Irish civil war (True Faith, Troubles, For A Few Troubles More), the absurdity of it all leads us to no such character climax, at least not "on-screen". Therefore the book comes off as remarkably measured, which is a great angle for a Punisher Book.
I never felt connected to the Punisher before this book, despite all the previous Ennis work, Baron, Rucka, etc... But this is a Frank Castle book, and knowing what he would become, this gives a worthy perspective, one that will be followed by at least a sequel "season", Castle's second tour in 'Nam.

Agreed Fantastic prequel to Ennis’ Born/Punisher MAX series. Can’t wait for the story of Frank’s 2nd tour. Hopefully we won’t have to wait 3 years from the announcement until the actual release date like we had to for this one. Basically anything that Ennis touches that is either Punisher or warfare related is pure gold. And this was the best of both worlds.

Basically anything that Ennis touches that is either Punisher or warfare related is pure gold. And this was the best of both worlds. I don't know about that : while his first punisher run was at the time much welcomed and revigoring for the title, twenty years after, it doesn't read that well. Its parodical ultra violence has been played to death and lacks the substance of his third run on the character. His second run was often even worse than that, pure shock value, with the stupidest stories : while the idea of an underground mob of dwarves that cut the legs of its competitors to even the game (with one of the most original and was somewhat fun back then, it was at the same time nothing more than juvenile. The War zone mini was quite frankly terrible, pure and unnecessary parody.... His Born series, I don't remember that well, because the art was so ugly that it kind of ruined the experience for me. As for warfare, I don't know, some of his Vertigo stuff was nice, but it also often was a tad boring. Have you read all of his Avatar warfare series, his recent tank series at Darkhorse, his Dynamate Battlefields series, etc? A lot of those is either repetitive, or not very inspired, if not amateurishly drawn... My favorite Ennis remains the Crisis days, Demon, Hitman, Punisher Max (including all of his Fury series & Baracuda), some Hellblazer, and Godess. I also don't particularly enjoy most of his endings : it's too often a western movie-ish walk into the sunset by the heroes after a final battle, and I find that frankly quite lazy. But when he hits gold, it indeed is pure gold.

But when he hits gold, it indeed is pure gold. Agreed that his Marvel Knights run was for the most part pretty goofy and over the top, but I still like it enough for what it is. His MAX run on the character though is right up there with Moore’s Swamp Thing and the Thomas/Buscema Conan run as one of my favorite series ever. I really, really love the inner monologues that Ennis writes for Frank. No one before or since has come close to duplicating them. Though I would say that the series would’ve been absolutely perfect if he would’ve avoided any traces of dark humor altogether and just kept it as an extremely brutal and nihilistic crime drama (with maybe the exception of Barracuda, who may be my favorite Punisher villain ever). As for the Tanks series, I never even bothered. The whole idea of getting Ennis to head a war series based on some free to play, low budget videogame never jived with me. I absolutely love his “War Stories” series though. Best pure war comics since Joe Kubert’s heyday IMO. Though I admit the new Avatar series hasn’t been as top notch.
