So will you guys briefly touch upon what was done with the property after Evanier? My only experience with Black Hawk was from Action Comics Weekly. 2:42: So tempted to give Prince Hal the custom title of "CCF Elder Statesman" Love Hal's soothing but crystal clear teacher voice! 4:18: Regarding going back to enjoy what was published the decade before you got into comics -- try being me and first starting in 1989! 6:15: Seconded: Mike's Amazing World is the greatest site on the internet (Thanks, dcindexer!) 12:40: I think you could make the case that most of the post-Wolverine antiheroes are one-note. Would be interesting to discuss... 14:40: I really do need to check out some Arnold Drake, especially because of Hal's endorsement. 16:55: "Pushing your face into sleaziness." Best synopsis of Identity Crisis I've ever read. 18:08: Yes, it's called Batman Odyssey, and I've heard terrible things. 21:43: The first Robin solo story in Star Spangled is one of my most cherished gems. 29:30: Oh wow. Darwyn Cooke on Crimebuster would have been amazing! 39:00: Wolfman would not have been allowed to continue on Black Hawk anyway after he fell out of favor with the higher-ups over Teen Titans #20. Intriguing background overall! While the idea of an international special forces team feels cliche today, I can see how that was innovative for the time, I totally get Hal's point about that team being the embodiment of boyhood fantasy, and now I want to grab a classic issue to see them fight a dinosaur. Very curious to hear about the Evanier title itself!

Really enjoyed this, Crimebuster and Prince Hal . My favorite part was Hal's recounting of his early comic book buying days (and that's saying a lot, because the entire podcast was very entertaining and informative). But I especially love getting glimpses into others' comic book buying habits. And CB, when you mentioned remembering a scene from a comic book (from your childhood) but not the exact issue, I could readily relate. There was a panel I remembered (with Wonder Woman) in a Silver Age Justice League comic I'd read at my cousins', but I did not know the exact issue until a few years ago when I was reading a JLA Showcase volume --and there was the panel! Looking forward to parts 2 and 3.

Good job on this. I have most, if not all, of the Evanier/Speigle run (which I remember enjoying, though not many specifics), as well as the 70s revival + a couple random 60s issues. Evanier did some good things with backup stories in the book.
Only disappointment with the podcast is that, unless I missed it, nobody mentioned Reed Crandall.
Also, Chuck Cuidera's tenure (mainly as an inker) must be one of the longest runs on a book.

Yeah, Prince Hal , why didn't you mention Reed Crandall?!

I get dissed for the fact that Ernie Chua is a fabulous cover artist.

I get dissed for the fact that Ernie Chua is a fabulous cover artist. Respect your elders, sonny. (Unrelated: Slam, ever hear from ish? I PM'd him, but crickets.)

There was also a Blackhawk novel that was published in August of 1982. I haven't read it in 30 plus years, but I did buy it when it came out. It seems an odd thing to publish if there wasn't some serious plans for Blackhawk.

I just listened to this episode, and Prince Hal did mention Reed Crandall in passing at one point, when talking about how Cockrum's covers looked like a callback to Crandall. You're off the hook, Hal!

I get dissed for the fact that Ernie Chua is a fabulous cover artist. How's this: Chua was not the worst cover artist of the 70s. (actually, I'd have a hard time getting rid of the Batman sketch I got from him in 75.)

That was a terrific and unexpected first installment, guys! That Blackhawk run is one of my favorites, solely responsible for propelling Evanier into the top tier of my favorite writers, and Spiegle into the top tier of my favorite comics artists. Not being a war comics fan, and having no appreciation at all for what I'd seen of Spiegle's work (in Brave & Bold's Nemesis backup), I originally passed on Blackhawk. I continued to ignore it for several months, although it was getting good word of mouth in places like CBG, which I had noticed. When my comics dealer had a sale on any back issues with a color in its title, I picked up the entire run up to that point for cover price or less, and I was bowled over by how good it was. After that, I bought nearly everything that Evanier or Spiegle produced (which is why I have a lot of Disney Adventures digests--with short Spiegle stories). And of course, it's reassuring to hear my peers agreeing with my assessment of Chan's run as DC's primary cover artist/designer. I appreciate his work in certain contexts, but I don't know why DC went on so long with him defining the look of the entire line. But the fact that they then replaced him with Vince Colletta...? *shrug*

These podcasts remain a constant pleasure, Crimebuster, and it was great to hear what Prince Hal sounds like! (Both of you gentlemen have great radio voices).
I don't think I ever read an issue of Blackhawk, barring the first of a Howard Chaykin reboot. The concept is pretty cool, though.
