Titans 14: Tempest takes center stage in this melodramatic issue where the traitor is revealed. The story flashes back and forward during the Titans' day where Nightwing is scanning his teammates with Spyral technology that detects any type of mental tampering or brainwashing. During all this three Atlanteans from Tempest's past emerge with a plan to poison surface dwellers. More Drama with Flash/Donna/Arsenal. Tempest declares his love for Lililth. Mal and Gnarkk go on the hunt for HIVE and Bumblebee's missing memories. The final page was quite a shock. Tempest hasn't had much to do in the title and it was nice to see a story geared towards him. Abnett continues to show what an excellent grasp he has with these characters. Buffy the Vampire style dialogue and quips plus the great art make for an awesome book. 9/10

Riverdale #5: very interesting character studies of Reggie and Josie. These 2 learn they have quite a bit in common, despite Josie's initial disdain of Reggie. Both of their fathers definitely won't be up for father of the year. Hoping this friendship between Reggie and Josie will be showcased on tv this fall. The art was very inconsistent. Some panels were stunning--almost like animation. Others looked rushed and unfinished. For 2 characters like Josie and Reggie, I would've appreciated more stylish and bold art. The story took time to read, which I like. I hate being able to read a book in under 2 minutes and this issue was a solid 15 minute read. story 9 Art 4

Hellboy and the BPRD 1955: Secret Nature Written by Mike Mignola and Chris Roberson Art by Shawn Martinbrough Summary: Hellboy and Dr. Farrier head to Oregon to look into a rash of cattle mutilations. Plot: In the newest look into Hellboy's past Mignola and Roberson give us a battle between between Hellboy and what he could have been. While it could have given us a great introspective look at how Hellboy views his roll in punching things that look a heck of a lot like him, what we got was a fairly simplistic punch em up that felt repetitive. While the 1950's stories started off really great the last few have been a bit of a let down; there's a lot of great history to mine but these issues feel like so much set up with out a whole lot of pay off. Art: Martinbrough has a great bead on Hellboy and his facial features; I just wish he was given something better to draw. Grade: 5/10

Star Wars Rogue One: Cassian & K-2SO Written by Duane Swierczynski Art by Fernando Blanco Summary: In this Rogue One special we get a look at how Cassian Andor and K-2SO became the super spy duo we know and love. Plot: Not since Han Solo first shot Greedo in cold blood at the cantina has there been a Star Wars character with murkier motives, but here he's devoid of any of that energy. What should have been a tense, action packed espionage thriller was a a total snore fest in the hands of Swierczynski. The story's thrust on needing imperial protocol was beyond vague, we're not told what it is, or why it's needed so there's no sense of importance and the danger just feels bland. Art: I'm starting to think that I'm staring to sound like a broken record but Blanco is seriously under-served here by the story, he creates a great sense of a world that's full of exotic peoples and the technology is right on point but there isn't a whole lot for him to have fun with.

The Newsboy Legion and the Boy Commandos Special #1 This is a lot of fun! (If not particularly ground-breaking.) Whether you like it or not probably depends on how much you like Howard Chaykin and his unflinching look at American fascism. Bonus feature: A Golden Age Newsboy Legion story where the boys start their own comic book about slum life.

TMNT Universe #13 Written by Erik Burnham Art by Sophie Campbell Summary: With the help of a supposed magical sword it seems Karai's path forward first takes her back to the past. Plot: While the main story running through TMNT and Dimension X seems bloated and slow this tale of self discovery with Karai is a book that reminds you of why IDW's Turtles is so good. Burnham crafts a fantastic character driven story of exploring who Karai wants be after the fall out of the death of the Shredder. It uses history, myth, action, horror and intimate character moments to create a perfectly paced issue that is beautifully tense. While I don't care one iota about what's going on with Krang Burnham has really made me love Karai. Art: Campbell continues to wow in this issue, I really loved the traditional looking artstyle she used history sequence about Kubli Kahn, it was simple yet beautiful.

Action 958: Superman and Luthor team up to stop The Machinist, who is controlling people with stolen Lexcorp technology. The story moved fast and felt very late silver age/early Bronze Age. While I love Lois and Jon, I have to wonder how long will Lois be content while her husband is off saving the world. While Lois has been an active participant in the comics, it seems like we are seeing more and more panels with Lois and Jon waiting for Clark to come home--or panels showing Lois talking to him wondering when he's coming home.
The art was very uneven. Gulliem March's drawing is competent and looked very Kubertesque to me, but his figures seem awkward. I did like his version of Luthor. He looked more the menacing Lex I remember from childhood rather than today's polished version. 7/10

#14. Written by Dan Abnett. Art and Cover by Brett Booth and Norm Rapmund. The spotlight is on Tempest as the Trident attacks the Titans. Garth reveals his magic powers. More secrets come out among the Titans. The traitor is revealed on the last page... Abnett continues to nail all the characters in this team. One of my favorite titles of DC Rebirth. 9/10.
