When I read this back in what, 1966? it was my favorite Batman issue of the year. I'd be afraid to re-read it and have my childhood memories dashed. I know it would be |

Already this is getting my attention because she has a turd on top of her head. That can't be a mistake. I didn't even notice that...what the hell is that on her head? I had always thought it was just her hair done up in an odd style, but now that I look more closely it really doesn't look like her hair. World's strangest crown? Alas, I don't have a copy of this issue to take a closer look, or see if she and her headwear are also inside the book. |

Apparently Grant Morrison resurrected that skull-masked Batman villain a few years back and used the name he had been given years earlier in some Japanese Batman comics (translations? originals?): Lord Death Man, which I think must be one of the best supervillain names ever.
Something about the strange combination of the Hallowe'en imagery of that name and costume with the very down to earth murderousness of the gun just works for me. I also like the casual brutality with which he kicks Robin into the open grave while he's struggling with Batman - as if fighting Batman isn't enough to occupy his full attention, he can't help sneaking in another bit of villainy on the side when the opportunity arises. Lord Death Man now ranks as one of my favourite supervillains, even though I've never read a story in which he appeared!

Is he not the same scythe wielding maniac from Batman:Full Circle? Though I don't remember the skull head but a mask instead.

Well said, and it's shame that, like many Silver Age stories, the cover so outstripped the story. For years, I only saw that cover in ads, but it etched itself into my mind. When I did finally find a copy of it years later, the story was "meh" at best. But I agree, there was something eerie and frightening about that cover then and I sense it still whenever I see it. I think this is an instance in which the logo itself, with Batman doing a Dracula shtik with his cape, was perfect for the mystery-oriented Batman, and here it adds to the atmosphere. (love the driving rain, too.) Imagine this cover with the Batman logo that followed it, and I think you see what I mean.  As for the story being disappointing when you go back to reread something you loved once, it's sad, but it certainly proves just how good the covers and cover artists were back then. |

And polls are open.... so many good choices, I love the skull motif, but Action Ace posted one of my favorite covers of all time with that Spectre glow in the dark #1, glow in the dark is the only gimmick I go for, I think it's a product of being a child of the 70's where to make every other toy cool it glowed in the dark...
