What I remember of June 1974
I'm 20 years old and seriously thinking of quitting comics. They're getting expensive with all the giant size issues from both Marvel and DC and all the magazine sized issues as well.Up to this point I would buy everything I was interested in and now, financially it was becoming impossible. My other interests namely records, girls, concerts, cool clothes and uh illegal substances would come first.Well the issues I remember enjoying back then include
Adventure-The Spectre was great Amazing Adventures-Killraven was cool Avengers-Englehart ruled Batman-Two Face and golden age bats Captain America-Englehart could do no wrong Captain Marvel Dr Strange-My favorite marvel book at this time Jungle Action-McGregor Black Panther Manthing-He made my heart sing Tomb of Dracula

In June, 1974, I bought these off the stands: Adventure Comics #435: Aparo's Spectre had soothed the pain of losing him on Phantom Stranger. Better that we get two shorter runs on both characters than one long run on just one! Batman #258: I still loved the 100 Page Super-Spectaculars, and I was always up for a Two-Face story, but I had a little less interest in the Super-Specs when they were entirely devoted to one character--this issue is all Batman stories. Crazy Magazine #6: I loved Marvel's answer to MAD, and this issue was the closest I'd get to seeing the notorious Exorcist movie for many years. Creatures on the Loose #31: It was never particularly good, but I kept up with the Man-Wolf solo series here, even as the monster craze was dying. Daredevil #113: I didn't buy DD often, but I know I got this one. I remember Bob Brown's art looking pretty good here. Defenders #15: Never missed an issue. Doctor Strange #3: Despite my devotion to the Defenders, I wasn't as faithful to their respective solo series. I kept on board with this run of Doctor Strange for a little while, though, even though this was a Ditko reprint. Flash #229: Another 100-pager, and an Earth-2 crossover, which was always an easy sell. I preferred the variety here to the Batman above, although it was still a lot less unpredictable than the earlier Super-Specs: except for one Green Lantern reprint, all the characters were super-speedsters. Frankenstein #12: I don't know why I decided to jump on the Frankenstein train with this issue. I tried it, didn't much like it, and I hated this logo. Giant-Size Conan #1 Giant-Size Dracula #2 Giant-Size Master of Kung Fu #1: My love for DC's Super-Specs transferred over to Marvel's Giant-Sizes, so I got all of these, even though I didn't much love Conan or Shang-Chi. Human Torch #1: Torch reprints from two eras sounded like a good deal to me. I liked the Golden Age reprint half better, I think Justice League of America #113: A rarity: a disappointing JLA-JSA team-up. Despite featuring my favorite JSA-er, the Sandman, I really counted on the annual team-ups to be epic, and this one just wasn't. Nice to get another JSA adventure reprint in this Super-Spec. Ka-Zar #5: I kept on trying Ka-Zar throughout the 70's, for some reason. I don't remember anything but the cover. Marvel Premiere #17: I read the early Iron Fists, but gave up soon after this issue. Marvel Spectacular #9: I didn't like Thor, but I sure loved this reprints from the Kirby/Colletta era. Marvel Spotlight #17: I stuck with this Son of Satan series to the end, but it never recapture the magic of the Trimpe issues Marvel Team-Up #25: I hated this but I kept buying it. Why couldn't another team-up book be as good as B&B? Marvel Treasury Edition #1: I never especially loved the Treasury format, but I did buy this one. Marvel Two-in-One #5: I felt like an insider with respect to the Guardians of the Galaxy, because I had a copy of their first appearance--one of my rare back-issue purchases at the time. So I got this issue, teaming them with the Thing. Omac #1: Kirby really delivered the goods on this one. Great first issue of a great series. Planet of the Apes #1: This was the most highly-anticipated comic of the month for me, and I was fully satisfied by it. Plop #7: Bought them all, loved at least part of most issues. Shazam #14: Kurt Schaffenberger's art on the Marvel Family lead story in this Super-Spec was so much fun. I didn't usually like the more cartoony styles, but I really dug his work. Spirit #3: I had no idea how good the Spirit was until I got the first Warren issue. From then on, I tried not to ever miss it. Sub-Mariner #72: The weird unofficial Aquaman crossover, not that I realized it at the time, since the corresponding issue of Aquaman had been published a year or two before I started collecting. Superboy #204: The Legion was really magic in this era. Hooked me hard. Swamp Thing #12: Still a favorite. Although I missed Wrightson, I convinced myself Redondo would be a fine substitute in the long run. Little did I know how much this series was about to disappoint me. Tomb of Dracula #24: I knew quality comics when I saw them. Vampire Tales #6: I wanted to read about the much-hyped Lilith, Daughter of Dracula. I was mostly bored by her story.
COMIC OF THE MONTH: PLANET OF THE APES #1! It seemed more special than anything published this month to me. COVER OF THE MONTH: OMAC #1! Quite a departure from Kirby's typical compositions, with small art and heavy text on a blank background, it's unforgettable, irresistible, and creepy. COMIC I MOST WANT BUT DON'T HAVE: RED CIRCLE SORCERY #8! Just for the Gray Morrow Green Hornet cover. I mean, I know it's probably not really the Green Hornet, but..c'mon, it's the Green Hornet, for cryin' out loud! Just look at the guy!

June 1974A lot of my favourite comics come from this era but I was still nearly a year away from getting back into buying them. The only one I definitely recognise as something I read at the time is Plop 7 .

Good stuff this month: from DC, the Treasury-sized issues of Whiz Comics and Superman, the B and B and Detective (the culmination of the Manhunter saga) 100-pagers, Weird Worlds, the Shadow, Phantom Stranger, Kamandi, Secret Origins: quite the gallimaufry of genres. From Marvel: MoKF, the neglected, but worthwhile War is Hell, Conan, Engelhart and Brunner's Dr. Strange, but no, not Hulk 181...

In July 1974 , this would have been the summer after grade 7 for me. I was 12 years old and still about a year away from getting back into comics, but the Doctor Strange 4 that came out this month was the single comic that did persuade me to start reading them again when I came across a coverless copy of it in someone's trash several months later. I was totally blown away by the artwork and the writing and couldn't believe what I'd been missing. I still think it's one of the single best issues Marvel ever published - or anyone else, for that matter.
