Hey! Jungle Action #17! That's the first super-hero comic I ever bought! The next month, I got Daredevil #126. And within the next few months I was picking up Hulk, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Avengers, Captain America, Thor and I don't know what-all. I was doomed! You buy one and then the next time you look you've got an entire paper grocery bag full of them!

here is the link from Mike's News-stand for June 1975:Amazing Spider-Man #148 Captain Marvel #40 Daredevil #125 Defenders #27 Doc Savage #1 (b&w mag) Eerie #67 Fantastic Four #162 Incredible Hulk #191 Jungle Action #17 Marvel's Greatest Comics #58 Swamp Thing #18 Thor #239 Tomb of Dracula #36 Werewolf by Night #33 Still mostly going back to favourite series and characters from before I quit comics, but pretty early on I could see that Spider-Man, Daredevil, the FF, the Hulk, Swamp Thing, and Thor, though all still enjoyable, weren't quite up to the level they had been a few years earlier. OTOH: Jungle Action starring Black Panther - I was very excited to see one of my favourite characters with his own series, though unfortunately I came in on the very last issue of the epic Panther's Rage storyline - was excellent, and something new and different from the comics I remembered; Tomb of Dracula looked better than ever and the writing, again, seemed to have taken a step forward from the early issues I had read before Werewolf by Night also looked good - though I missed Mike Ploog's artwork, I quickly became a fan of Don Perlin, and I really liked this new character, Moon Knight As for the others I listed: Captain Marvel I had been a fan of from the old green & white uniform days; the change to the new look was just taking place when I stopped reading comics, so I had missed all the Jim Starlin stuff and came into the series when it was in a bit of a downswing. Doc Savage - I had always been intrigued by the character from admiring those Bama paperback covers, even though I never read any until years later. I must have liked this black & white series well enough, because I think I bought almost every issue, in spite of never being a huge fan of Tony DeZuniga's partnership with John Buscema on the art. Eerie #67 I never actually bought myself, but our (adult) neighbour across the street gave me a coverless copy he had a few months later. It was my intro to the Warren stuff which I had of course often seen on the shelves but never read. I was lucky to start with a pretty high-quality issue, but the expense and the inconsistency of the anthology format kept me from becoming a regular reader.

JULY 1975: 1st Issue Special #7: The Creeper: I loved this character since the first time I saw him. I was really hoping for this to lead to a new series for him and Ditko. This one has a naughty visual on the cover, if you look hard. Astonishing Tales #32:Deathlok: Buckler's cyborg felt new and exciting and different. Brave and the Bold #122:Batman and Swamp Thing: Aparo draws my favorite swamp monster. Champions #1: I was excited to see a new superhero team. Defenders #28: Never missed an issue! Fear #30: Morbius was one of my favorite Marvel monsters, but this series was always a let-down. Hercules Unbound #1: I loved this new DC series. Neat premise, and I liked the post-apocalyptic setting. Inhumans #1: Another new team comic from Marvel. I wanted to like it, I liked the characters, but it never delivered for me. Invaders #2: I don't know why I was still buying this. I guess I figured it had to get better. Justice League of America#123: I still loved the JLA but it was losing its luster, even in the annual JSA team-up. Kull and the Barbarians #3: I was fascinated with Solomon Kane. Marvel Movie Premiere #1:The Land that Time Forgot: I got this as summer vacation car reading. I didn't usually care for the Filipino style but I remember kind of liking Sonny Trinidad's work here. Marvel Presents #1:Bloodstone: I was excited for this debut, but it wasn't as good as I'd hoped for. Marvel Spotlight #24:Son of Satan: I kept waiting for this to achieve the promise of its early Trimpe-drawn installments, but it kept drifting farther away from what I wanted. Marvel was trying to make it more palatable, but I wanted something edgier. Marvel Team-Up #38:Spidey and The Beast: Hank McCoy was one of my favorites in those days, and we didn't see much of him since his series had been cancelled. Marvel Treasury Edition #7:Avengers: The team was never my favorite, but it was a treasury with some of their most legendary issues reprinted. Well worth it. Phantom Stranger #39: I knew this had to be nearing its end, but I still loved it. Fred Carillo's art was even less satisfying than Talaoc's, though. Planet of the Apes #12: I would not miss an issue under any circumstances. Plop #17: Again, a don't-miss series for me. Sandman #5: I loved the first issue, and I was glad it was continued, but...this was really kiddie stuff. Skull the Slayer #2: The debut issue was promising, so I committed to the full run, but this book kept changing directions, losing most of what I found appealing. Super-Villain Team-Up #2: One of the more unusual of the team-up comics. I liked Dr. Doom and the Sub-Mariner, so I figured I'd like this. Never really did, that much, though. Superboy and the Legion ofSuper-Heroes #212: It seemed like this comic was *always* good. Swamp Thing #19: Hoping in vain that this would bounce back. I was beginning to perceive that maybe I didn't like Gerry Conway's writing. Tomb of Dracula #37: I’m really glad I figured out that this wasone of the best comics being published in the mid-70’s. I started buyingseveral issues earlier and didn’t stop until the end. Warlock #9 : Seemed pretty mind-blowing at my age, then. The only Starlin work I ever really dug. X-Men #95: This was clearly going to catch on. I was excited for this series, and looked forward to it a lot.

Still two months from buying comics for myself.
And this month is kind of a blank slate. I know there are comics in there I've read in one format or another. But none stand out and I'm not sure I own any in anything other than reprints.

With DC Comics, I bought anything with reprints, so the titles like DC Special, Super-Team Family (God, what a stupid title for a comic) and the tabloids of Superman and the Origins of Super-Villains were right up my alley. Always enjoyed Brave and the Bold, and loved Swamp Thing, too, so that was a no-brainer. (Plus the “crucifixion cover” is always cool: good idea for a future cover contest, perhaps…) Hercules was one of the new DC titles that I wound up enjoying. Somehow this odd little comic (probably devised to cash in as a “sword and sorcery” type) was able to make it to the end of its two-year run with art by Wally Wood, Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez and Walt Simonson. It also managed to avoid having Ernie Chua-Chan do any of its covers. He was DC’s go-to guy back then and could make any potentially interesting story look awful. Check out the absolutely blah cover (lousy drawing, lousy composition)on the first part of that summer’s JLA-JSA team-up. How anyone could make one of those look dull, I’ll never know, but Chua-Chan did. Inertia choices: Batman, JLA, Detective, Superboy and the Legion, Swamp Thing, Tarzan (without Kubert writing and drawing, it was at best a loyalty pick for me). Marvel titles I looked forward to buying: Warlock, War is Hell, Savage Sword of Conan; Tomb of Dracula; Master of Kung Fu. Inertia choice: Conan (Monster of the Month Club) Curiosity choices: Loved all of the weird titles, try-outs, and one revival in particular: Bloodstone, Modred the Mystic, Champions, Skull, X-Men 95. Distribution was still an issue in my area then, so many of the Marvel reprint titles never seemed to be on the stands, or I’d’ve been picking those up.

Okay, I give up. If I look at this much longer, I'll feel like a real perv.

Marvel titles I looked forward to buying: Warlock, War is Hell, Savage Sword of Conan; Tomb of Dracula; Master of Kung Fu. Time and time again... whether it is on this board, some other board, or one of the many Facebook forums... this is the consistent answer is it not? Not many comics before or since were as good as these.

Okay, I give up. If I look at this much longer, I'll feel like a real perv. There's a tiny drawing of a dog urinating on a fire hydrant on the street far below the Creeper and the Firefly.
