There's a very interesting article in the Atlantic about the work of letterers and colorists in modern day comics. Called The Invisible Artists it looks at the contributions of the people who make comics behind the limelight of the writers and artists. It has comments from a number of letterers and colorists working on books across the board, Image, Archaia, Marvel, DC etc. about what they do, how they do it, etc. I know a lot of folks here at the classics board dont like modern coloring techniques, but this is an interesting read and a glimpse behind the curtain to see what the expectations and thought process behind some of the techniques are. The Wicked + The Divine by Gillen & McKelvie and Cowles and Wilson is the centerpiece feature of the article, but other books are highlighted too. -M

I feel like they are more visible than ever. Colorists even sign the covers now.

I read a recent book on comic lettering a few years ago that I thought was interesting Comic Book Lettering: The Comicraft Way by J.G. Roshell and Richard Starkings. The Wicked + The Divine by Gillen & McKelvie and Cowles and Wilson is the centerpiece feature of the article, but other books are highlighted too. I read the first 14 issues of The Wicked + The Divine and think it's a beautifully drawn and colored series.

I read a recent book on comic lettering a few years ago that I thought was interesting Comic Book Lettering: The Comicraft Way by J.G. Roshell and Richard Starkings. I bought that book too, a few years ago--very glad I did, it gives a great overview. IIRC I'd read about it on Todd Klein's lettering site (another great resource).

I missed this...in honor of the anniversary of Gaspar Saldino's birth on Sept. 1, Sept. 1 has been christened Letterers Appreciation Day. In honor of it, Todd Klein organized a letterer's roundtable discussion, details over at CBR if you can get to it through all the ads. The rest can be found through the linkadink. -M
