The Adventure digests!!! In the early 80s I was very much into the LSH. I wanted to know all about first appearances, costumes--everything to do with the Legion. Those Adventure digests with the LSH reprints were like gold to me!

My time with Adventure Comics in the day was always short. I would find them only sporadically missing 1-3 issues at a time only to find a surprise issue reminding me to keep looking. Followed runs were The Legion, a couple of Black Orchid , a few Spectre and Aquaman's. The most issues being during the Dollar Comics run and the Dial H for Hero. Only ever had 2 of the digests but enjoyed all issues I have. These days you can't even find many of them in back issues here in Phoenix except for Aquaman and Spectre.

I'd read earlier Adventures starring the Legion courtesy of my cousins and like a lot of young 'uns, fell head over heels in love with the LSH. The first Adventure I ever owned was #357. However it was tough finding subsequent issues; none of the candy stores I had access to seemed to carry the comic on a regular basis. At some point I managed to persuade my (comic book-hating) parents into gifting me with a subscription to Adventure. The Legion was by far my favorite DC feature, so I was ecstatic! Adventure remains the only comic I've ever subscribed to. Of course, a couple of issues into that subscription the lead feature switched to Supergirl (with the LSH being shoved into a few pages in the back of Action). To this day I remember how dazed and shocked I was when I read that accursed "special announcement" about the switch in the Adventure lettercol. Needless to say, when that Adventure subscription lapsed I didn't renew (though later on when Sekowsky took over the Supergirl feature, I managed to pick up an issue here and there. I was a huge Sekoswky fan and I really liked his "mod" Wonder Woman, so I thought lightning would strike twice. But it didn't; IMO his work on Supergirl was tiresome and sloppy). I hear you, brother!

The Legion of Super-Heroes was by far my favorite, but I also loved the Spectre and Aquaman series, as well as the reprints of the Challengers of the Unknown. And yes, Dollar Comics are always a good thing!

I had bought them mostly for the LSH stories, but wound up enjoying the other stories in them as well.

* The 3-issue Black Canary story by Alex Toth. Yeah, this is my pick. I think Alex Toth is the best artist ever to work in American comics and I always liked him as a superhero artist, specifically. I've been reading a bunch of Silver Age Legion stuff lately and that's quite good fun. Don't think I ever read a dollar issue of Adventure. Huh.
