I flipped through the first issue at the shop and decided to give it a pass. -M I did the same, it didn't look terrible but it didn't wow me either.

What do you think of the Amra storyline in the old 70s Conan the Barbarian series? Which makes me wonder - has Dark Horse ever tried doing their own version of Conan and Amra? I forget now how much of the CtB story was invented by Roy Thomas and how much came from REH. Never read it. I researched it. That was a time in my life when I had little access to comics & was only getting a handful of titles via subscription. Well, it's definitely Roy Thomas's take on Conan vs Tarzan, so you'll probably find it interesting.

Red Sonja/Wonder Woman makes more sense to me. However I would be first in line to buy a Tarzan/Conan crossover! What do you think of the Amra storyline in the old 70s Conan the Barbarian series? Which makes me wonder - has Dark Horse ever tried doing their own version of Conan and Amra? I forget now how much of the CtB story was invented by Roy Thomas and how much came from REH. It's all Thomas, berkley. Howard mentions that Conan was called "Amra" (the lion) by the Black Corsairs, but no explanation is given as to how he gained the name. And that's pretty much it! In Savage Sword of Conan, there even was a story (SSoC 97) in which Conan gains the name of Amra in a different way than by defeating a Hyborian Tarzan. That particular story is among the worst of the lot!

You're right, Roy would never, ever have let that kind of nonsense fly. Those were the "bad old years" during which anything went in the Conan mags: flying horses, cities in the clouds, giant robot turtles and the like. All countries were interchangeable, everybody spoke the same language and swore by the same gods, communications were as good as they are today... a far cry from the carefully constructed primitive world that Howard (and then Roy) crafted so believably.

That's why I'm not interested in this at all. I highlighted your post here RR and this makes perfect argument why this book will fail. Thank you for pointing it out to me.

I will be making extensive use of RR's SSoC review thread when I start seriously looking into which back-issues I want to hunt down for myself. Thanks again, Ben!
