So while I was out of the loop apparently DC and Dark Horse announced a Conan Wonder Woman cross-over limited series by Gail Simone and Aaron Lopresti that is set to debut next month. It's se tto run 6 issues. I just found out about this tonight, and I am not sure how I feel. The art seen here doesn't inspire a lot of confidence, although I generally like Lopresti's stuff, that is not a good look for Conan for me. I also really am trying to avoid buying new material in floppies, but I just might have to get this, not sure yet. I think I might have been more excited if it were Wonder Woman Red Sonja, but I don't know. -M

I feel like it'll either be awesome or a horror show... with very little middle ground. My fear (especially with Simone writing) is that Wonder Woman is just going to be a stand in for Red Sonja. If both characters are close to being in character, it could be really interesting.
I agree with you on that art though.. not great... hopefully the book with be better.

I agree about Conan's look - a little too muscle-bound in a modern body-builder kind of way - though that has unfortunately become the norm for all too many artists today whether they're doing fantasy characters like Conan or superheroes. BTW, how come Conan has brown hair? Is that the way Dark Horse always has it?
As for the concept itself, it doesn't make much sense to me: Wonder Woman's a superhero (or a goddess, depending on whatever DC is doing with the character these days) and Conan's very much a mortal, human hero. Seems like WW would just be able to plow through whatever obstacles Conan usually has to deal with in his adventures. But I remember writer Gail Simone doing something like this in her time as WW writer - she had WW on a long adventure where she met characters like Beowulf and DC's Conan stand-in Klaw. I forget how that worked now.

There;s a couple of preview pages up at CBR (if you can avoid the ads long enough to read it). The art on the pages looks a little better than the cover, but I am not too sure of the set up for the story... here's a few of the pages (more at CBR) I am still on the fence about this. -M

BTW, would an Aesir call Conan "Barbarian"? I thought they were at much the same level, culturally and that it was the more developed civilisations of the south that thought of the Cimmerians and the Aesir as barbarians.

I just got an email from my friend Jeff who is a Gail Simone fan, and he said this book an average work of Gail Simone and the other person who is Aaron Lopresti did a slightly better work than Gail and having said that this collaboration isn't all that bad neither good.
Most of the Wonder Woman fans that I talked to don't like this book and most of Conan do. They think that this team-up is intriguing but has the wrong people handling it. Gail did some Wonder Woman work and this is her (according to friends) is not the best and sadly that is their opinion not mine.
I glance some of the art at CBR and I say it is not my cup of tea.

I think I came off the fence, and on the wrong side.

I'll probably end up getting it as its probably the only chance I have to be able to share a Conan comic with my lady. She's a big WW and Gail Simone fan, and serendipitously, she and some of her online gaming friends just got into Conan: Exiles. So no better time and chance, even if it isn't exactly what I would want.

Agreed, and that's something many writers did at Marvel as well. It's as if "Barbarian" was Conan's nationality. (Of course some might insist that to most groups, anybody else is a barbarian... it's a one-size fits all derogatory term). Also... "Conan had never seen a building larger than a thatched hut until the invaders built a fortress in his lands. He killed his first man there (...)" No he didn't. Not according to Dark Horse's own Born on the battlefield series. Nice reference to Venarium, but Conan had already killed people by the time he joined the attack on that fort (including a childhood friend, alas).

I've always meant to go there someday - I hear the scenery's beautiful!"

I read the first issue. It's...not bad. Gail Simone cares about the character so she makes it worse

Red Sonja/Wonder Woman makes more sense to me.
However I would be first in line to buy a Tarzan/Conan crossover!

Which makes me wonder - has Dark Horse ever tried doing their own version of Conan and Amra? I forget now how much of the CtB story was invented by Roy Thomas and how much came from REH.

Never read it. I researched it. That was a time in my life when I had little access to comics & was only getting a handful of titles via subscription.
