As we were just discussing in another thread, Stan has based many of Usagi's stories and characters upon influences of his, often Samurai films he grew up with. So I thought it would make sense to compile all of these and perhaps discuss other potential influences that Stan has not specifically stated.
A few that I know Stan has stated in interviews:
Usagi - Musashi Miyamoto Gen - Yojimbo Jei - Jason (Friday the 13th) Zato Ino - Zatoichi Lone Goat & Kid - Lone Wolf & Cub
I'm sure there are others I'm not thinking of right now.
Meanwhile, I'm wondering if Stan has ever indicated an influence for Tomoe. If there is some classic Samurai film with a tough as nails Samurai woman who also has a tender heart beneath it all and who must continually fight for her independence and status in a man's world, I want to see that film.

Cool list.
Isn't she a cat version of Tomoe Gozen?

From this Wikipedia page: "Inspector Ishida is based on real-life Honolulu policeman Chang Apana" I also think I remember that Sasuke was somehow influenced by a legendary character, but I can't remember who.

I wonder if there was any historical inspiration for Inazuma, specifically people who were supremely skilled with a sword despite little to no training. Has anyone heard of anything like this?

I just came upon Inazuma (1952) today. Though, on a surface level, it doesn't have much to do with Inazuma beyond the name, there are some thematic commonalities about family estrangement when you read the reviews and get a sense of the larger plot. It's a reach but, considering how influential classic Japanese cinema was to Stan, it's certainly possible this film helped him shape the character and backstory.
