Mace Windu #1Written by Matt Owens Art by Denys Cowan Summary: In this snap shot into the early days of the Clone Wars, Jedi Master Mace Windu and a band of young Knights must come to terms with their new roles in protecting the peace. Plot: I picked this up as I thought it was just a fun one shot and was greatly surprised to find out it was the first of a new miniseries. While it was a nice action based throw back to the Dark Horse Clone War Books, I think a more character driven plot would have made this more memorable as we've already seen several plots like this in the past. It's fun enough for what it is but at this point it's just not what I want in a Star Wars book as it isn't giving us new insight into what we've already seen or any forward momentum into unknown regions of the Star Wars Universe. Art: I'm usually a sucker for Cowan's art and he seems like the perfect guy for the baddest Mother F#%!er in the Galaxy but there really wasn't anything memorable here. Maybe it's the fault of the story for not giving him anything fun to do, or maybe Denys just isn't into it but it all seems kind of bland which is disappointing. Grade:6/10

Star Wars #35Written by Jason Aaron Art by Salvador Larroca Summary: Han and Chewie escor the infamous Grakkus the Hutt to his new prison. Plot: This was a pretty fun little one shot Han and Chewie adventure. I initially didn't have very high hopes for this story but Aaron really showed us that he still has it as he really illustrated in this short tale that he really knows what makes Han tick. While we know that Han won't really turn tale on the Rebels as we see him in Empire the allure of the old smuggler life was still there and Aaron plays on that and manages to build a good amount of tension by pitting Han's former life against his new one while providing a surprisingly in depth look at his character with the conclusion. And although it does look like Aaron is going to manage to conclude his R2-D2 story next issue I still can't help but feel that this is a rush job and I'm saddened to see that as I'd love to see more from Aaron here. Art: With all movie characters present here Larroca's photo use here doesn't stick out which gives us that fun film experience but I still wonder if the actors get paid for this or is it considered fair use? Grade:8/10

Rebels #6Written by Brian Wood Art by Wilfredo Torres Summary: The adventures of George Washington before he became the father of the United States. Plot: I've been loving Wood's look into the early days of the Republic and this was a great look as we don't often see Washington as a person. The French and Indian War doesn't often get much coverage, you're lucky if 5 out of 10 people could even tell you what it was about, never mind that George Washington was a key player in starting it so I'm really looking forward to Wood delving deeper into this. Art: Wilfredo Torres' strict and realistic attention to detail definitely lends the piece an air of authenticity. That said, hes faces aren't nearly as beautifully done as Andrea Mutti's in the previous issues but I think his take on displaying warfare might be more fitting. Grade:9/10

BPRD #149Written by Mike Mignola and Scott Allie Art by Lawrence Campbell Summary: Liz and the BPRD are surveying a town in Tennessee when they are attacked by Vampires. Plot: I love the return of the vampires! Of all the strangeness of Mignola's world the vampires and their plot have long been my favorite element outside of Hellboy himself and now that they are tied into the Ugdru-Hem it seems that they aren't far from the foreground so I'm hoping to see them take center stage in a big way real soon. On top of all that we got Abe back! The book still lacks a strong center with the team being so fragmented but I love the pieces in and of themselves and I hope they come together soon. Art: Campbell's vampires were glorious, and the action was moodily conveyed as always. Grade:10/10

Wonder Woman #29: The story gets a tad better in this issue by Shea Fontana with art by Inaki Miranda. Wonder Woman and Etta fight a band of assassins out for Wonder Woman's DNA. I had not heard of any of the villains except Cheshire and Plastique (who is not the same Plastique I recall from Firestorm--perhaps she is a new 52 version?) Anyway, Wonder Woman is put in a dilemma when she learns the mystery person who wants her DNA could use it to cure all kinds of diseases. Steve is in the story and he and WW share a very passionate kiss. We see the deep friendship between WW and Etta. While the issue has a couple of bright moments, it reads more like a fan-fiction story that hasn't quite been fine-tuned. The very mediocre art does not help the story. This is most definitely a fill-in arc. 5.5/10

Your Pal Archie #2: Classic Archie continues in this fun issue. My store still hasn't gotten copies of #1, but the continuing story was very easy to follow. Archie has the won the lottery (or so he and his friends think). He soon learns of all the trappings that come with his new wealth and is very happy when he learns that all is not as it seems. (Thanks to a grease smudge on his ticket). In the second story, Reggie gets hurt during football practice and becomes a changed young man who is super nice to everyone. The second story continues next issue. There is also a recent story included from the previous Archie series involving freshmen on the first day of school meeting Archie.
The writing and art are outstanding. While I love the new Riverdale comics, Your Pal Archie takes me back to happy childhood days--when Archie really did seem like my pal.
10/10

#2. Written by Ty Templeton. Art by Dan Parent and Ty Templeton. Cover by Dan Parent. The first story is classic Archie all the way. Despite the promise of wealth Archie stays who he is. Everyone around him goes a little crazy. Everything is back to normal when it is discovered Archie only won $100 not $15,000,000. The second story is a little too silly even for me. Reggie gets a concussion during football & has amnesia. He also becomes nice. Continued next issue. The third story is a reprint where freshmen meet the legendary Archie who is dating both Betty & Veronica. Funny story. I liked the 1st & 3rd story. The 2nd was just OK. 8/10.
