On Sept. 5, 1992, Bruce Timm's Batman: The Animated Series was introduced to the world for the first time making it's television debut.
This is my favorite iteration of the Batman hands down.
It's hard to believe it's been 25 years since it debuted.

Not my favorite version, but almost certainly the most consistently excellent version.

Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill are the Batman and Joker voices that I will ALWAYS hear in my head when reading Batman comics. And Bruce Timm came up with looks and designs which makes Batman eternal and his world comes alive without being a product of any one particular place and time. ONE OF THE BEST DAMN CARTOONS EVER!

I just rewatched On Leather Wings on Amazon Prime. I have the first few seasons on DVD, but it was easier to click on over to Prime and watch it. The only drawback, Prime has the New Batman/Superman Adventures opening rather than the classic Elfman themes opening.

Thanks, I wasn't feeling old enough today. What's even sadder is I go back to the Batman/Superman Hour. Olan Soule and Casey Kasem; Batman & Robin actually punching and kicking people! After two decades of Super Friends and the toned-down New Adventures of Batman, Batman TAS was a welcome sight.
I first read about the development in Comics Scene, not long after they had aired the Tiny Toons episode, "Batduck" where Plucky is Batduck (great cartoon). In 1992, I went to the Heroes Con, in Charlotte, NC, and they had a preview of "On Leather Wings" That was so awesome, I couldn't wait. I was a bit surprised that the series debuted on the weekend, with "Claws of the Cat, Part 1", then went into "On Leather Wings" on Monday and didn't give us Part 2 until the following weekend.
Loved the animation and as soon as they said they took their visual inspiration from the Fleischer Superman cartoons, I was onboard for the ride. I just wish they hadn't used the Burton Penguin design and went with classic; but, that was dictated from above. Thankfully, they rectified that later. They didn't seem to know what to do with the Penguin, until later, either. I like the episode where he tries to go straight; but not much of the few other ones.
They really got Mr Freeze right, with Michael Ansara. He brought such a power to that that it really resonated.
Could have done without Kate Mulgrew as Red Claw, though. Little too over-the-top, if you ask me.
Anyone confirm my memory on this:
I'm fairly certain that in the original broadcast of "Joker's Favor," Harley (who isn't yet named) is never seen in costume, except when disguised as a policewoman. Arleen Sorkin voiced her; but I'm all but certain that she was in regular clothes. Later, they re-animated her in costume and that is what is on the dvd. I'm pretty certain the costume didn't come about until the next appearance of Harley.

Nothing wrong with that opening but the original opening was far more enticing and dramatic. A fantastic cartoon, doesn't feel like it's been that long though. Conroy and Hamill are forever cemented in my mind as THE voices of Batman/Bruce and Joker. As for villains, Two-Face and Freeze are my two favorites in their interpretations.

I'd still over to see them redub the Nolan Batman movies replacing Christian Bale's voice acting with Kevin Conroy doing the lines. It wouldn't make them good movies per se, but they would be a whole lot more watchable than the terrible voice performance of Christian Bale in the films.

If you go over to the Internet site 13thdimension.com they are celebrating the anniversary with some very cool posts and interviews from folks who have worked on the series. They have a post with Kevin Nowlan about his designs and another with Kevin Altieri. They are doing a month long celebration. Check it out!

Great thread - thanks for the memories. I remember the debut of Batman: TAS back in September of '92. I was in college at the time, and even though I was probably too "old" for cartoons (ha ha) I still tried to check out as many episodes as my schedule allowed; I remember this originally being on in the afternoon, on weekdays.
This remains one of my favorite animated series of all time. Excellent animation style, and I liked the noir/night-time setting (in many of the episodes), the storyline(s), music, and the opening sequence.
I have since bought all of the DVD sets, along with the excellent Mask of the Phantasm animated film (also on DVD).

A full blue ray release of Batman:TAS was announced at the NYCC this weekend. I might be in if they restore the original opening to the episodes, as I only have 2 seasons on DVD.
