The best writer to pen Swamp Thing. :-( I'm not sure I'd go that far, but the Wein/Wrightson Swamp Thing is definitely what I'll remember Len Wein for, personally. One of my all-time favourite comic runs. The Alan Moore ST seems so different, I don't even feel the need to compare them. This makes me wonder - do most people think Len Wein was at his best at DC? I know Cei-U rates his writing on the Hulk very highly, and he also created (or co-created? I forget) the new X-Men that ended up becoming so popular a little later on, but most of the talk I've seen so far has focused on his writing and editing at DC. Len Wein co-created the new X-Men. The appearances of the various characters were mostly work by Dave Cockrum that predated the revival of X-Men. When Cockrum was drawing Legion of Super-Heroes, he had sketched various characters he was thinking of using for LOSH. Nightcrawler, Colossus, and Storm were all reworked from those visuals. Wein worked with what Cockrum brought. There was editorial involvement with some elements as well. Wein credited Roy Thomas with coming up with the name Storm for a character who combined visual elements from Cockrum (for a proposed character called Black Cat) and powers from Wein (for a proposed male character named Typhoon). After Wein, left Claremont and Cockrum changed the characters to varying degrees. I get the impression Nightcrawler was the personality that changed the most. Wein conceived of Nightcrawler as being serious and distant. Claremont made him more light-hearted.

More recently he had written an excellent DCU limited series looking back on the history of the DCU (I'm a sucker for stuff like this) with artistic talent from a nice cadre of DC artists Andy & Joe Kubert cover & insides including J.H. Williams III, Tony DeZuniga and Scott Kolins Joe Kubert cover & insides including Scott Kolins, Jose Luis-Garcia Lopez, and Dave Gibbons George Perez cover & insides as well including Scott Kolins, Jerry Ordway, Keith Giffen, Scott Koblish, and Al Milgrom Brian Bolland cover & insides including Scott Kolins, Jerry Ordway, and Dan Jurgens Bill Sienkiewicz cover & insides including Jesus Saiz, Scott Kolins, and Karl Story No, nothing original or new here, but just a great overview with today's talent of the DCU timeline and perspective. I really liked it.

I just saw this. Wow, that is shocking! Way too young. R.I.P. Len. I loved his JLA and Spider-Man, plus his work on Batman, and Hulk, and of course the X-Men was extremely important.

On an unexpected day off today, I decided to watch a movie on Amazon Prime, and I picked a "found footage" horror film called "Savageland". One of the actors looked really familiar. Especially in the flashback photos in the film, he looked a heckuva lot like Len Wein. According to IMDB, the actor was, indeed, Len Wein.

Really shocked when I saw the notice. Far too young. There would be no X-Men for Claremont to re-vitalize without Wein's major contributions. I first read of Green Lantern around the time he and Dave Gibbons teamed up for a limited run on the title back in the 80s (I think, 13 issues or so?) where John Stewart took over as GL from Hal. Fun and dynamic issues that helped foster my love of the character and the Corps.
He will be missed. God Bless.

Very sad news. I recently read a collected edition of his Batman stories and enjoyed it very much. Brought back so many happy memories from childhood--and even though I can't recall every comic I read that he worked on--his name is very vivid in my memory. I remember seeing his name many times in the credits on splash pages.

Its been tough to reflect on his loss as I've read more by him in the last years than I ever did before. Particularly because I finally read his Swamp Thing run last year and I just finished his big Batman run. I really enjoyed both books involving two of my fave characters and I really wish I'd taken the time to read them much earlier. I can remember reading the paperback book sized edition of his Untold Legend of Batman series over and over again when I was in middle school. I think I got it through the book order at school. That and the Spider-Man: Saga of the Alien Costume trade paperback were my go-to favorite reads back then.
